Therearevariousmeasuresthatgovernmentsandindividualscouldtaketoprevent,oratleastmitigate,climatechange.Governmentscouldintroducelawstolimitthecarbondioxideemissionsthatleadtoglobalwarming.Theycouldimpose“greentaxes”ondrivers,airlinecompaniesandotherpolluters,andtheycouldinvestinrenewableenergyproductionfromsolar,windorwaterpower.Asindividuals,weshouldalsotrytolimitourcontributiontoclimatechange,bybecomingmoreenergyefficient,byflyingless,andbyusingbicyclesandpublictransport.Furthermore,thepubliccanaffecttheactionsofgovernmentsbyvotingforpoliticianswhoproposetotackleclimatechange,ratherthanforthosewhowouldprefertoignoreit.

Ifinsteadoftakingtheabovemeasureswesimplytrytolivewithclimatechange,Ibelievethattheconsequenceswillbedisastrous.Togivejustoneexample,Iamnotoptimisticthatwewouldbeabletocopewithevenasmallriseinsealevels.Millionsofpeoplewouldbedisplacedbyflooding,particularlyincountriesthatdonothavethemeanstosafeguardlow-lyingareas.Thesepeoplewouldlosetheirhomesandtheirjobs,andtheywouldbeforcedtomigratetonearbycitiesorperhapstoothercountries.Thepotentialforhumansufferingwouldbehuge,anditislikelythatwewouldseeoutbreaksofdiseaseandfamine,aswellasincreasedhomelessnessandpoverty.

'economicprogress'essay

题目:

Manygovernmentsthinkthateconomicprogressistheirmostimportantgoal.Somepeople,however,thinkthatothertypesofprogressareequallyimportantforacountry.

Discussboththeseviewsandgiveyourownopinion.

范文:

Peoplehavedifferentviewsabouthowgovernmentsshouldmeasuretheircountries’progress.Whileeconomicprogressisofcourseessential,Iagreewiththosewhobelievethatothermeasuresofprogressarejustasimportant.

Therearethreekeyreasonswhyeconomicgrowthisseenasafundamentalgoalforcountries.Firstly,ahealthyeconomyresultsinjobcreation,ahighlevelofemployment,andbettersalariesforallcitizens.Secondly,economicprogressensuresthatmoremoneyisavailableforgovernmentstospendoninfrastructureandpublicservices.Forexample,agovernmentwithhigherrevenuescaninvestinthecountry'stransportnetwork,itseducationsystemanditshospitals.Finally,astrongeconomycanhelpacountry’sstandingontheglobalstage,intermsofitspoliticalinfluenceandtradingpower.

However,Iwouldarguethatvariousotherformsofprogressarejustassignificantastheeconomicfactorsmentionedabove.Inparticular,weshouldconsidertheareaofsocialjustice,humanrights,equalityanddemocracyitself.Forexample,thetreatmentofminoritygroupsisoftenseenasareflectionofthemoralstandardsandlevelofdevelopmentofasociety.Perhapsanotherkeyconsiderationwhenjudgingtheprogressofamoderncountryshouldbehowwellthatcountryprotectsthenaturalenvironment,andwhetheritismovingtowardsenvironmentalsustainability.Alternatively,thesuccessofanationcouldbemeasuredbylookingatthehealth,well-beingandhappinessofitsresidents.

Inconclusion,theeconomyisobviouslyakeymarkerofacountry’ssuccess,butsocial,environmentalandhealthcriteriaareequallysignificant.

Themainproblemforanyonewhohopestomigratetoalargecityisthatthecostoflivingislikelytobemuchhigherthanitisinasmalltownorvillage.Inhabitantsofcitieshavetopayhigherpricesforhousing,transport,andevenfood.Anotherissueisthaturbanareastendtosufferfromsocialproblemssuchashighcrimeandpovertyratesincomparisonwithruralareas.Furthermore,theairqualityincitiesisoftenpoor,duetopollutionfromtraffic,andthestreetsandpublictransportsystemsareusuallyovercrowded.Asaresult,citylifecanbeunhealthyandstressful.

However,therearevariousstepsthatgovernmentscouldtaketotackletheseproblems.Firstly,theycouldinvestmoneyinthebuildingofaffordableorsocialhousingtoreducethecostofliving.Secondly,politicianshavethepowertobanvehiclesfromcitycentresandpromotetheuseofcleanerpublictransport,whichwouldhelptoreducebothairpollutionandtrafficcongestion.InLondon,forexample,theintroductionofacongestionchargefordrivershashelpedtocurbthetrafficproblem.Athirdoptionwouldbetodevelopprovincialtownsandruralareas,bymovingindustryandjobstothoseregions,inordertoreducethepressureonmajorcities.

Inconclusion,governmentscouldcertainlyimplementarangeofmeasurestoenhancethequalityoflifeforallcityresidents.

However,thepersonalandeconomicargumentsgivenabovecanbeconsideredfromtheoppositeangle.Firstly,ratherthanthepositivefeelingofincreasedindependence,peoplewholivealonemayexperiencefeelingsofloneliness,isolationandworry.Theymissoutontheemotionalsupportanddailyconversationthatfamilyorflatmatescanprovide,andtheymustbeartheweightofallhouseholdbillsandresponsibilities.Secondly,fromthefinancialpointofview,ariseindemandforhousingislikelytopushuppropertypricesandrents.Whilethismaybenefitsomebusinesses,thegeneralpopulation,includingthosewholivealone,willbefacedwithrisinglivingcosts.

Therearevariousreasonswhypeoplebelievethatuniversitiesshouldonlyoffersubjectsthatwillbeusefulinthefuture.Theymayassertthatuniversitycourseslikemedicine,engineeringandinformationtechnologyaremorelikelytobebeneficialthancertainartdegrees.Fromapersonalperspective,itcanbearguedthatthesecoursesprovidemorejobopportunities,careerprogression,bettersalaries,andthereforeanimprovedqualityoflifeforstudentswhotakethem.Onthesocietallevel,byforcingpeopletochooseparticularuniversitysubjects,governmentscanensurethatanyknowledgeandskillgapsintheeconomyarecovered.Finally,afocusontechnologyinhighereducationcouldleadtonewinventions,economicgrowth,andgreaterfutureprosperity.

Inspiteofthesearguments,Ibelievethatuniversitystudentsshouldbefreetochoosetheirpreferredareasofstudy.Inmyopinion,societywillbenefitmoreifourstudentsarepassionateaboutwhattheyarelearning.Besides,nobodycanreallypredictwhichareasofknowledgewillbemostusefultosocietyinthefuture,anditmaybethatemployersbegintovaluecreativethinkingskillsabovepracticalortechnicalskills.Ifthiswerethecase,perhapswewouldneedmorestudentsofart,historyandphilosophythanofscienceortechnology.

Inconclusion,althoughitmightseemsensibleforuniversitiestofocusonlyonthemostusefulsubjects,Ipersonallypreferthecurrentsysteminwhichpeoplehaverighttostudywhatevertheylike.
