Somemanufacturersusetheirname(the‘familyname’)foralltheirproducts,e.g.Philips,Colgate,Yamaha.Others,includingUnileverandProcter&

Gamble,marketvariousproductsunderindividualbrandnames,withtheresultthatmanycustomersareunfamiliarwiththenameofthemanufacturingcompany.Themajorproducersofsoappowders,forexample,arefamousfortheirmulti-brandstrategywhichallowsthemtocompeteinvariousmarketsegments,andtofillshelfspaceinshops,therebyleavinglessroomforcompetitors.Italsogivesthemagreaterchanceofgettingsomeofthecustomofbrand-switchers.
