Thoughtheworldofprintisrecedingbeforeatideofdigitalbooks,blogsandotherWebsites,agenerationofcollegestudentsgrowingupwithtechnologyappearstobeholdingfasttotraditionaltextbooks.Thatloyaltycomesataprice.Textbooksareexpensive-ayear'sworthcancost$700to$900-andstudents'frustrationswiththeexpense,aswellastheemergenceofnewtechnology,haveproducedaperplexingarrayofoptionsforobtainingthem. 

InternetretailerslikeAmazonandTaresellingnewandusedbooks.TheyhavebeenjoinedbyseveralWebservicesthatrenttextbookstostudentsbythesemester.Some1500collegebookstoresarealsoofferingrentalsthisfall,upfrom300lastyear.HereatHamilton,studentsthisyearhaveanewwaytoavoidthemiddleman:

anonprofitWebsite,createdbythecollege'sEntrepreneurClub,thatletsthemsellusedbooksdirectlytooneanother. 

Theexplosionofoutletsandformats-includingdigitalbooks,whicharerapidlybecomingmoresophisticated-hasleftsomestudentsbewildered.Aftercompletingthedifficultjobofcourseselection,theyareforcedtoweighcostversusconvenience,analyzetheirownstudyhabitsandguesswhichtextstheywillwantforyearstocomeandwhichtheywillnotmiss.

Indeed,manyHamiltonstudentsgrowpassionateabouttheweightyvolumestheystillcarryfromdormroomtolecturehalltolibrary,evenastheycompulsively(克制不住地)checktheirsmartphonesfortextmessagesandc-mails.

OnThursday,studentsatmorethan40collegesnationwideareplanninganAffordableTextbooksDayofActiontoencouragefacultymemberstoassigntextsthatarelessexpensive,orofferedfreeonline. 

Fornow,buyingbookstheold-fashionedway-neworused-prevails.CharlesSchmidt,thespokesmanfortheNationalAssociationofCollegeStores,saidthatifacampusstoresoldanewbookfor$100,itwouldtypicallybuythebookbackfor$50atsemester'sendandsellittothenextstudentfor$75.
