1.教学目的和要求

Objectives:

Studentswillbeableto:

1)graspthemainidea(Gettoknowsomeeffectivewaystostudywell.)andstructureofthetext(Developingaparagraphwithageneralstatementsupportedbyexamples).

2)learntoreadpassagesforthefirsttimeunderstandingthegeneralideaandforthesecondtimefindingoutthedetailsandtheanswerstothequestions.

3)masterthekeylanguagepointsandgrammaticalstructuresinthetext;

4)conductaseriesofreading,listening,speakingandwritingactivitiesrelatedtothethemeoftheunit.

2.教学的主要内容

1)Importantwordsandlanguagepointsinthetext

performconcentrateignoreassignrecallessentialdueschedulestretchrelevantcontentretainparticipateintellectualeconomicsapproachakethemostofcountforputincutdownonsticktoleadtoputdownputaway

2)Writingtechnique

Thetypeofthiswritingisanexposition.

Thistextisatypical“how-to-do-thingsessay”.Thiskindofarticleisusuallydividedintotwoparts:

Part1,theimportanceofdoingthis;Part2,theconcretemethodsorproceduresofdoingit.Andthesecondpartisthemainbodyofthearticle.

Generallyspeaking,there’satopicsentenceatthebeginningofthetexttoexpressthethesisandaconclusivesentenceintheend.

Inthistext,aftertheexamplesatthebeginning,theauthortellsusthetopicsentence“Thestudentsatthetopoftheclassgettherebymasteringafewbasictechniquesthatotherscaneasilylearn.”.Tomatchthetopicsentence,theauthorgivesustheconclusionsentence“Afterall,thesecretsofAstudentsarenotsosecret.YoucanlearnandmasterthemandbecomeanAstudent,too.

3)Culturalbackground

(1)gradingsystem

Gradingisjustameansforteacherstomeasureandassessstudentsstudy.Thereusuallyaretwogradingsystem:

thefive-grade-markingsystemandpercentagescales.(五分制和百分制)Schools,collegesanduniversitiesinGreatBritainandtheUnitedStatescommonlyuselettergradestoindicatethequalityofastudent’sacademicperformance:

A(excellent),B(good),C(average),D(belowaverage),andF(failing).IntheUnitedStates,workratedCoraboveisusuallyrequiredofanundergraduatestudenttocontinuehis/herstudies;workratedBorhigherisusuallyrequiredofagraduatestudenttocontinue.Inpercentagescales,100percentisthehighestmark,and70percent(or65percent)isusuallythelowestpassingmark.

(2)studentsatuniversity

Auniversitystudentwhohasnotyettakenhisorherfirstor“bachelor’s”degreeisanundergraduate.IntheUnitedStates,afirst-yearstudentatacollegeoruniversityandinahighschoolaswell,iscalledafreshman,asecond-yearstudentasophomore,andathird-yearstudentajunior,andafourth-yearstudentasenior.Agraduateisapersonwhohascompletedauniversitydegreecoursewhileapostgraduate(orgraduateintheUnitedStates)isapersondoingstudiesthataredoneatauniversityafteronehasreceivedafirstdegree.

Alsoknownasrapidreading,speed-readingisamethodofreadingrapidlybyskimmingandscanning.Theaimistoincreasethenumberofwordsreadinacertainlengthoftime,aswellasthereader’scomprehensionofthetext.

CambridgeisacityinEnglandandthehomeofCambridgeUniversity.CambridgeliesontheRiverCam,about50milesnorthofLondon.Ithasrapidlygrowingmanufacturingindustriesonitsoutskirts,manyofthemcloselyassociatedwiththeuniversity’sfamousscientificlaboratories.CambridgeUniversityisnotedforscholarshipinmodernliteratureandscience,especiallynuclearphysicsandastronomy.Theuniversity’sbuildingsarenotedfortheirfinearchitecture.

(5)BristolUniversity

BristolUniversityisoneofthefinestengineeringandscienceschoolsinGreatBritain.TheUniversityislocatedinBristol,oneofthemostattractivelargecitiesinEngland.Thecitywasfoundedalmost1,000yearsagoandsoonafterbecamethesecondcityinEngland.ItslongandvariedhistoryhasleftBristolalegacyoflovelybuildings,amongwhichisitsmanymedievalchurches.

(6)UniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeley

LocatedinnorthernCaliforniaacrosstheBayfromSanFrancisco,theUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeleyisoneoftheworld’smostrespectedandpremieruniversities.Renownedforitscuttingedgeideasanddiversefaculty,Berkeleyhasover33,000studentsinavarietyofdisciplines.
