Objectives:

2）learntoreadpassagesforthefirsttimeunderstandingthegeneralideaandforthesecondtimefindingoutthedetailsandtheanswerstothequestions.

3）masterthekeylanguagepointsandgrammaticalstructuresinthetext;

4）conductaseriesofreading,listening,speakingandwritingactivitiesrelatedtothethemeoftheunit.

2.教学的主要内容

1）Importantwordsandlanguagepointsinthetext

performconcentrateignoreassignrecallessentialdueschedulestretchrelevantcontentretainparticipateintellectualeconomicsapproachakethemostofcountforputincutdownonsticktoleadtoputdownputaway

2）Writingtechnique

Thetypeofthiswritingisanexposition.

Thistextisatypical“how-to-do-thingsessay”.Thiskindofarticleisusuallydividedintotwoparts:

Part1,theimportanceofdoingthis;Part2,theconcretemethodsorproceduresofdoingit.Andthesecondpartisthemainbodyofthearticle.

Generallyspeaking,there’satopicsentenceatthebeginningofthetexttoexpressthethesisandaconclusivesentenceintheend.

Inthistext,aftertheexamplesatthebeginning,theauthortellsusthetopicsentence“Thestudentsatthetopoftheclassgettherebymasteringafewbasictechniquesthatotherscaneasilylearn.”.Tomatchthetopicsentence,theauthorgivesustheconclusionsentence“Afterall,thesecretsofAstudentsarenotsosecret.YoucanlearnandmasterthemandbecomeanAstudent,too.

3）Culturalbackground

（1）gradingsystem

Gradingisjustameansforteacherstomeasureandassessstudentsstudy.Thereusuallyaretwogradingsystem:

thefive-grade-markingsystemandpercentagescales.（五分制和百分制）Schools,collegesanduniversitiesinGreatBritainandtheUnitedStatescommonlyuselettergradestoindicatethequalityofastudent’sacademicperformance:

A（excellent）,B（good）,C（average）,D（belowaverage）,andF（failing）.IntheUnitedStates,workratedCoraboveisusuallyrequiredofanundergraduatestudenttocontinuehis/herstudies;workratedBorhigherisusuallyrequiredofagraduatestudenttocontinue.Inpercentagescales,100percentisthehighestmark,and70percent（or65percent）isusuallythelowestpassingmark.

（2）studentsatuniversity

Auniversitystudentwhohasnotyettakenhisorherfirstor“bachelor’s”degreeisanundergraduate.IntheUnitedStates,afirst-yearstudentatacollegeoruniversityandinahighschoolaswell,iscalledafreshman,asecond-yearstudentasophomore,andathird-yearstudentajunior,andafourth-yearstudentasenior.Agraduateisapersonwhohascompletedauniversitydegreecoursewhileapostgraduate（orgraduateintheUnitedStates）isapersondoingstudiesthataredoneatauniversityafteronehasreceivedafirstdegree.

Alsoknownasrapidreading,speed-readingisamethodofreadingrapidlybyskimmingandscanning.Theaimistoincreasethenumberofwordsreadinacertainlengthoftime,aswellasthereader’scomprehensionofthetext.

CambridgeisacityinEnglandandthehomeofCambridgeUniversity.CambridgeliesontheRiverCam,about50milesnorthofLondon.Ithasrapidlygrowingmanufacturingindustriesonitsoutskirts,manyofthemcloselyassociatedwiththeuniversity’sfamousscientificlaboratories.CambridgeUniversityisnotedforscholarshipinmodernliteratureandscience,especiallynuclearphysicsandastronomy.Theuniversity’sbuildingsarenotedfortheirfinearchitecture.

BristolUniversityisoneofthefinestengineeringandscienceschoolsinGreatBritain.TheUniversityislocatedinBristol,oneofthemostattractivelargecitiesinEngland.Thecitywasfoundedalmost1,000yearsagoandsoonafterbecamethesecondcityinEngland.ItslongandvariedhistoryhasleftBristolalegacyoflovelybuildings,amongwhichisitsmanymedievalchurches.

（6）UniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeley

LocatedinnorthernCaliforniaacrosstheBayfromSanFrancisco,theUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeleyisoneoftheworld’smostrespectedandpremieruniversities.Renownedforitscuttingedgeideasanddiversefaculty,Berkeleyhasover33,000studentsinavarietyofdisciplines.
