   Ashecameintothedoctor'sconsultingroom,hesaidcausally,´Goodmorning,doctor.HereIamagain.'Thedoctorwasalittlesurprised.Heaskedhimafewquestions,examinedhischestandthentookthepoundwhichthefarmerinsistedongivinghim.Thenthedoctorsaidwithasmile,Well,sir.There'snothingnew.PleasecontinuetotakethesamemedicineIgaveyouthefirsttimeyoucametoseeme.'

   Amanwenttoseehisdoctoronedaybecausehewassufferingfrompainsinhisstomach.Afterthedoctorhadexaminedhimcarefully,hesaidtohim,`Well,there'snothingreally

   MariahaddecidedthatassoonasshehadfinishedschoolshewouldbecomeanaupairgirlinLondon.TwoofherfriendshadalreadyspentayearwithafamilyinKensington,andtoldhertheyhadhadaninterestingtimeandhadmanagedtolearnalotofEnglish.ShewasadvisedbyherHeadTeachertogetherparents'consentandtomakeallthenecessaryarrangementspriortoherdeparture:

haveenoughmoneyforherreturnfare,knowexactlywhatkindofafamilyshewasgoingtolivewithandwhattheyexpectedofher.

ShortlyafterhereighteenthbirthdayMariareceivedaletterfromMrsHutchinson,thewifeofanadvertisingexecutive,statingthetermsonwhichshewouldbeemployed.TheHutchinsonslivedinahouseinChelsea.Theyhadthreechildren;twoboys,agedfourteenandten,bothatboardingschools,theelderataPublicSchoolintheMidlandsandtheyoungerataPreparatorySchoolinSurrey; 

theyoungestchildwasagirlagedeight,andshewenttotheFrenchLyceeinSouthKensington.DuringtermtimeMariawouldhavetotakethegirltoschoolinthemorningandfetchherintheafternoon.ShewouldhavetohelpMrsHutchinsoninthehouse-washingup,makingthebeds,layingthetable,dustingtherooms,answeringthedoor,takingtelephonemessages,shoppingandrunningerrands. 

ShewouldbeguaranteedthreeeveningsaweekfreeandcouldattendEnglishclasseseitherfromeleventilloneinthemorningorfromhalfpastonetillfourintheafternoon.Shewouldreceive3aweekpocketmoney.Mariawasdelightedwiththeconditionsandthoughtthattheywerefair.Shealsolikedthelookofthefamily,asMrsHutchinsonhadthoughtfullyenclosedaphotographwithherletter.

                              

 AdditionalInformation

   Itwasnothingforagirlt.obesentawaytoservicewhenshewaselevenyearsold.Thatmeantleavingthefamilyasshehadneverbeenpartedfromforadayinherlifebefore,andgoingtosomeplacemilesawaytobetreatedlikeadog.I'vegotnothingagainstgirlsgoingintogoodservice.

 Inmyopinion,goodserviceinaproperlyrunbighousewasawonderfultrainingforalotofgirlswhoneverwouldhaveseenanythingdifferentallthedaysoftheirlivesiftheyhadn'tgone.Itwasbetterthanworkingontheland,then,andifitstillexistednow,IreckonI'dratherseeanyofmydaughtersbeagoodhousemaidorawell-trainedparlourmaidthanadolled-upshop-assistantorafactoryworker. 

Butfolksaretooproudtoworkforotherfolks,now.evenifit'stotheirownadvantage,thoughasfarasIcanseeyouarestillworkingforotherfolks,whateveryou'redoing.Bighousesdidn'twantlittle

girlsofeleven,evenaskitchenmaids,sothefirstfewycarshadtobeputinsomewhereelse,beforeyougoteventhatamountofpromotion.

 Bighousesexpectedgoodservice,butyougotgoodtreatmentinreturn.It.wasn'tlikethatatthesortofplacemyfriendshadtogo.Mostlytheywenttothefarmers'houseswithintenortwentymilesfromwherethey'dbeenborn.ThesefarmerswereajumpedUp,proudlotwhodidn'tknowhowtotreatthepeoplewhoworkedforthem.Theytookadvantageofthepoorpeople'sneedtogettheirgirlsofftheirhandstogetlittleslavesfornearlynothing.Theconditionswereterrible.

   MrSmithgavehiswifetenpoundsforherbirthday-tenprettypoundnotes.Sothedayafterherbirthday,MrsSmithwentshopping.Shequeuedforabus,gotonandsatdownnexttoanoldlady.Afterawhile,shenoticedthattheoldlady'shandbagwasopen.Insideit,shesawawadofpoundnotesexactlyliketheoneherhusbandhadgivenher.Soshequicklylookedintoherownbag-thenoteshadgone!

MrsSmithwassurethattheoldladywhowassittingnexttoherhadstolenthem.Shethoughtshewouldhavetocallthepolice;but,asshedislikedmakingafussandgettingpeopleintotrouble,shedecidedtotakebackthemoneyfromtheoldlady'shandbagandsaynothingmoreaboutit.Shelookedroundthebustomakesurenobodywaswatching,thenshecarefullyputherhandintotheoldlady'sbag,tookthenotesandputtheminherownbag.

   Whenshegothomethatevening,sheshowedherhusbandthebeautifulhatshehadbought.
