PausaniasbeginshisdescriptionfromtheHellenisticAcropoliswherehefindsthetempleofTycheAkraiaandalittlefurthertheDioscouroiTemple.Thestatuesofthembothweremadefromwood.

DescendingfromtheAcropolis,hecametotheTheaterandinthestagehesawastatueofAratos,sonofKleinias,holdingashield.

Fromthere,hevisitedthenearbyTempleofDionysoswhosestatuewasmadeofgoldandivoryandathissideswereBakchaiofwhitemarble.

PausaniasascendingtotheGymnasiumofKleinias,onhisrightsawthesanctuaryofArtemisPheraia,thestatueofgoddessmadeofwoodhadbeenbroughtfromPheraiandintheGymnasiumthebustsofHeraklesandArtemis.

LastlyPausaniasmovedtowardstheSacredGatetotheeasternsiteoftheplateau,wherethemainpartoftheAncientAcropoliswas.ThefirstbuildinghevisitednearthegatewasthatofAthena,averylargetemple,whichhadbeenfoundedbyEpopeosandwhohadbeenburiedinthefrontofthealtar.Bythistimethetemplehadbeendestroyedandonlythealtarhadremained.

ThedesperateAthenians,whowereoutnumberedfourtoone,organizedasurpriseattackonthePersianformations,andmanagedagainstalloddstodefeatthemanddriveawaytheirenemies.Asthelegendgoes,Phidippidesthenranmorethan40kilometresbacktoAthenstobringnewsoftheirvictory,anddiedashortwhilelaterfromexhaustion.ItisafterPhidippides?

finalrun,fromMarathontoAthens,thatthe41.3kilometreMarathonraceisnamed.
