  SunsetSonghasasocialthemetoo.ItisconcernedwithwhatGrassicGibbonperceivesasthedestructionoftraditionalScottishrurallifefirstbymodernizationandthenbyWorldWar1.Gibbontriedhardtoshowhowcertaincharactersresistthewar.Despitethis,thewartakestheyoungmenaway,anumberofthemtotheirdeaths.Inparticular,ittakesawayChris’husband,EwanTavendale.ThewarfinallykillsEwan,butnotinthewayhiswidowistold.Infact,theGermansaren’tresponsibleforhisdeath,buthisownside.Heisshotbecauseheissaidtohaverunawayfromabattle.
