GoluchandEpstein'sdevice,detailed6inapaperreleasedJuly1inthejournalPLOSONE,solvesthisproblem.Thisnewdevicepermitsjustasinglebacterial7celltoenteraninnerchamber8containingafoodsource,towhichtheonlyaccessisamicroscopic9passagewayjustslightlynarrowerthanasinglecell.Thepassagewayissosmallthatthefirstcelltoenteritgetsstuck,blockingentrybyanyothercellorspecies.Onceinside,thiscellpro-liferatesasinpreviousdevices,andwhenitdoesitfillsuptheinnerchamberwithapure,single-speciessample,sinceitisisolated10fromcompetitionfromotherspecies.
