Anearthquakehappenswhentwoplatesrub(碰撞)together.Theearthplatestravelindifferentdirectionsandatdifferentspeeds.Ifoneplateisslowlyforcedunderneaththeother,pressurebuildsupuntiltheplatesbreakapart.Thisprocesscausesthegroundtomove.Itisanearthquake.Inotherwords,earth-quakesaretheshakingoftheearth’ssurfacecausedbytheearth’srockyouterlayerasaresultoftheenergystoredwithintheearth.Thestrainwithintherocksissuddenlyreleased(释放).
