Inadditiontoevaluatingfullyautomated,ordriverlesscars,theresearchersalsohopetotestoutso-calledconnectedvehicleswithinMcity’slimits.Connectedcarscaneithercommunicatewithoneanother(vehicle-to-vehiclecontrol,orV2V)orwithpiecesofequipment,suchastrafficlights,thatarelocatednearroadways(vehicle-to-infrastructurecontrol,orV2I).
EventhesmallestdetailsofMcityhavebeenplannedoutinadvancetocopytheconditionsthatconnectedandautomatedvehiclescouldfaceintherealworld.Forexample,therearestreetsignscoveredupwithgraffiti,andfadedyellowandwhitelanemarkingslinethestreets.
McityisjustonepartofamuchlargerprojectthatMTCanditspartnerorganizationsareestablishinginanefforttogetawholefleetofconnectedanddriverlesscarsontheroadinAnnArborby2021.Inadditiontothefakecity,MTCisalsocontinuingtolaunchconnectedandsemi-autonomous(半自动)carsonrealroadways.Eventually,theUniversityofMichiganandtheMichiganDepartmentofTransportationsaidtheyhopetoput20,000connectedcarsontheroadsofsouthernMichigan.
