2.1PURPOSE

Thepurposeofthisspecificationistoprovidethepackagingengineer,suppliersandprocurementteamwithabasisfordetermininginboundpackagingqualification.Thisspecificationprovidesaminimumstandardforinboundsuppliercomponentpackaging,receiving,warehousing,productprotection,andfactoryhandling.

2.2SCOPE

Thisstandarddescribesthemethodsandspecificationsforpackagingdesignofallsuppliersinboundcomponentpackagingusedondesktop,workstation,portableandserverplatforms.

2.5.1DellComputerCorporation

ItistheresponsibilityofDellProcurementtoensuresuppliershavethelatestrevisionofthisspecification.AnyquestionsasuppliermayhaveregardingthecontentofthisdocumentshouldbecoordinatedthroughtheappropriateDellRegionalSupplierQualityEngineer（SQE）,orthePackagingEngineeringDepartmentifdetailedinformationisrequired.

Anydeviationstothisspecification,orchangestothepackagingafterinitialacceptance,mustbeapprovedbyDellPackagingEngineeringDepartmentbeforeimplementation.SuppliersunabletocomplyingwiththisspecificationorthatanticipateadditionalcosttobecomecompliantmustnotifyDellProcurementforapprovaltodeviateortoimplementthenecessarychanges.

2.5.2

Supplier

SuppliershallcommunicatepackagingassumptionstoDellComputerCorporationinquote,includingfactorssuchascost,boxdimensions,weight,quantityperboxandinternalpackagingdescriptions.ThiscommunicationshallbecoordinatedthroughDellprocurement.

SuppliershallcommunicateanymodificationstopackagingtoDellPackagingEngineeringforreview,testingandapproval.

Asrequired,suppliershallprovidepackagingdrawings,specifications,samplesandtestresultstotheappropriateDellPackagingEngineerforreview.

2.6COMPLIANCE

Intheeventofnon-complianceDellreservestherightto:

∙Rejectandreturnanyshipmentsimproperlypackaged/palletizedoridentified.

∙Chargethesupplierforthecostoflaborandmaterialsforanyre-packingresultingfromthenon-compliancewithDellSpecifications

∙RemovethesupplierfromthelistofapprovedsupplierswhorepeatedlyfailtocomplywithDellpackagingrequirements.

3.0

PACKAGINGREQUIREMENTS

3.1PRODUCTPROTECTION

ItistheresponsibilityofthesuppliertoensurethatallshipmentstoDellComputerCorporationarepackagedand/orpalletizedsothatbothcontainerandcontentarriveatDellComputerCorporationfreefromdamage.Thepackagingmustprovideacceptablelevelsofproductprotectionandstorageintegrity.

PackagedcomponentsshouldbetestedinaccordancetoDellPackagedProductTestProcedure00121.Individualmastercartonsaretestedintheeventpalletizedloadsarebrokendownforindividualcartondistribution.

Testingconsistsof:

Test1–RandomVibrationTest.Thepurposeofthistestistosimulatethecombinationofvibrationfrequenciesthatoccursimultaneouslyintransportationenvironments.

Test2–DropTest.Thepurposeofthistestistodetermineifthepackagingsystemwillprotecttheproductduringasuddenshockthatmayoccurinthedistributionenvironment.

3.2LEGAL

Itistheresponsibilityofthesuppliertoensurethatpackagingandpalletizingcomplywithallapplicablelawsandregulationsincludingbutnotlimitedto:

RailRegulations:

UniformFreightClassification,Rule41.

TruckRegulations:

NationalMotorFreightClassification,Item222.

AirRegulations:

InternationalAirTransportationAssociation.

3.3ENVIRONMENTAL

Packagingdesignsshouldeliminateexcessivepackagingmaterialsresultinginreducedmaterialhandling,transportation,storage,recyclinganddisposalcosts.Asageneralrule,packagingdesignsshouldnotcontain“voidfill”materialusedtofillexcessivecartonspace.

Whenpossible,allpackagingmaterialsusedshouldbemadeofhighlyrecyclablematerialsandcontainthehighestrecycledmaterialcontentconsistentwithitstypeandfunctionalrequirements.Bondingofdissimilarmaterialsisnotrecommendedduetorecyclabilityissues.Useoflikematerialswithinthepackageispreferred.Plasticbags,whenrequiredshouldnotusecoloredplasticresin.

Reusablepackagingshouldbeconsideredapplicable.
