Thesenumbersarestrikingbecausegirlscanbejustasgoodatmathasboysare.Butsomehow,manygirlspickuptheideathatmathisn’tforthem.Andnotonlydotheyentercompetitionslessoftenthanboysdo,buttheyalsoarelesslikelytopursuemath-relatedcareers.Infact,justoneineveryfourU.S.workersinmathandcomputer-sciencefieldsisawoman.
Whenitcomestogirlsandwomenbeingunderrepresentedinmath,RandallConesays,“Thetroubleisaculturalone.It’sapersonalviewthing.”HeisamathematicianandcomputerscientistatSalisburyUniversityinMarylandHesaid,“Thisviewaffectshowmanywomenstudyadvancedmathandfindjobsinfieldsthatrelyonmathskills.”
Buttheproblemismorecomplex.In2016,tworesearchersattheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnologyinCambridgeinvestigatedwhyfewergirlsthanboysrisetothetoplevelsofmathcompetitions.TheylookedatdatafromAMCevents.Hopingtobetterunderstandthisgender（性别）gap,theyfocusedonhigh-achievers.Agendergapinmathindeedexistsaroundtheworld,theyfound.However,theywerenotreadytosayforsurewhythismightbe.Infact,theproblemislikelyduetomanythings.Butpeer（同辈）pressuremayplayarole.Itmightdissuadegirlsfromjoiningmathclubsorpursuingotheractivitiesthatcouldhelpthembecomemathsuperstars.
