Cultureisawordforpeople’s“wayoflife”,meaningthewaytheydothings.Agroupofpeoplehasaseparateculturewhenthatgroupsetsitselfapartfromothersthroughitsactions.Culturesarewhatmakecountriesunique.Eachcountryhasdifferentculturalactivitiesandculturalrituals.Cultureismorethanjustmaterialgoods,thatisthingsthecultureusesandproduces.Cultureisalsothebeliefsandvaluesofthepeopleinthatculture.Culturealsoincludesthewaypeoplethinkaboutandunderstandtheworldandtheirownlives.

2.Whyshouldwestudycross-culturalcommunication?

Cross-culturalcommunicationreferstothestudyofsuccessfulcommunicationsacrossdifferentcultures.Itconcernstheunderstandingoftraditionandmodernization,consistencyandchange.Asweunderstandsomeoftheongoingnationalcharacteristicsofapeople,wecanexaminehowthiscultureisseenfromtheoutside,howitinteractswithotherculturesandhowitischanging.

Theincreaseininternationalbusinessandinforeigninvestmenthascreatedaneedforexecutiveswithknowledgeofforeignlanguagesandskillsincross-culturalcommunication.

Thechallengeisthatevenwithallthegoodwillintheworld,miscommunicationislikelytohappen,especiallywhentherearesignificantculturaldifferencesbetweencommunicators.Miscommunicationmayleadtoconflict,oraggravateconflictthatalreadyexists.Soitisveryimportantthatweshouldstudycross-culturalcommunication.
