IPurposeandDescriptionoftheTest

Purposeofthetest:

thisEnglishtestisdesignedforjuniorThreestudentsattheir

beginningofthenewterm.ThisisaninformaltestthatisdesignedtoevaluatetowhatdegreethejuniorthreestudentshasachievedinEnglishaftertwoyears’learninginjuniorschool.ItisalsoexpectedthatthetestresultscanhelpEnglishteacherstomodifytheirteachingplaninthefollowingmonths.Allthestudentswhoarejuniorthreecantakethetest.Thetestaimsattestingstudents’reading,grammar,writingskills.ThistestisservedforstudentswhoaregoingtotakeNationalCollegeEntranceExam.therefore,thetestingitemsareinaccordancewithNationalCollegeEntranceExamEnglishtestingitems.Themarksoflisteningsectionarenotcalculatedtofinalresults.So,listeningsectionareexcludedinthistest.

Aimsoftest

Testtakersshouldmasterthefollowingknowledgeandskills:

（1）languageknowledge

vocabulary:

testtakersareexpectedtoknow3000Englishwordsandexpressions.Excepttheirbasicmeanings,theyshouldalsobefamiliartotherelationshipsbetweenwords,likesynonyms,antonymsandsoon.Thecollocationrelationsbetweenwordslikeverb-preposition,adjective-preposition,adjective-nouncollocationsshouldbemastered.Inaddition,testtakersshouldknowabouttheformationofwordsandcanrecognizewhatisroot,stem,affixetc.Thatis,testtakersshouldhavemasteredmostofthewordstheylearnedfromprimaryschooltojuniorschool.

Grammar:

testtakersaresupposedtoknowgeneralgrammar,likesentencetypeandstructure,wordclass,tenseandvoiceandsoon.Thistestcontainsgrammarsection,tenitemsoffifteenmarksareincluded.

（2）Languageskills

readingskills

Candidatesarerequiredtocomprehendallkindsoftextswhichcomefromvariousbooks,magazines,newspapers.Therearesomenewwordsinthereadingmaterials,butnotmorethan5％ofthewholetext.Testtakersshouldgetthemainideaofeachtextquicklyandcorrectly.Theyaresupposedtoimplythemeaningofsomenewwordsandthewriter’spointofviewaccordingthecontext.Theyalsoneedtoknowthestructureofthattext,liketherelationshipofparagraphsandsentences.Theabilityofinferringaswellasunderstandingtextualcohesionandcoherenceundertimedconditionsisgoingtobemeasured.Theskillsliketherefore,scanning,skimmingarenecessary.

Testtakersshouldbeabletowritedifferenttypesofpracticalwritings,likeletters,notice,application,reportandsoon.Sometimes,theyneedtowriteexpositionorargumentation.Duringthewriting,testtakersshouldbecarefultotheirspelling,grammar,thechoiceofwords.Wrongspelling,grammar,improperwordswillmakethemlosemarks.Wrongformofthattypewillalsocauselowmarks.Writersshouldkeeptheircompositioncoherentandfluent.

BecausethelisteningandspeakingskillsarenotemphasizedinCollegeEntranceExam,thistestexcludethesetwoskills’measurement.

Itemployswrittenform.100minuteswillbegiven.Thefullmarksare120.Therearetestpaperandanswerpaper.Answerpapersincludeanswersheetoneandanswersheettwo.Answersheetoneneedbefinishedbypencil2B.

（ii）testcontentsandstructure

Totally,therearesixsections,52itemsinthistestpaper.Itcontainsreadingcomprehension,fiveofsevenchoice,cloze,grammar,errorcorrecting,writing.

ThissectionconsistofA,B,C,Dfourtexts.TheGenreortopicofeachtextisdifferent.Aftereverytext,thereareseveralmultiplechoicequestions（4options）tobefinished.Thefirstthreetextshavefouritemsrespectively.Thefinalhasthreeitems.Thereare15itemsinthissection,everyitemis2marks.Totally,itis30marks.

Itisquitesimilartocloze.Ashortessayisgiventocandidates.Fivesentencesaretakenawayfromit.Therearesevensentencesareprovided.Testtakersneedtochoosepropersentencesfillingtheblankinthetext.Choosingonecorrectsentencetheycanget2marks.Allthefivesentencesareworth10marks.

Thisisatraditionaltype.20wordsorphrasesaretakenawayfromatext.20multiplechoices（4options）aregiven.Testtakersneedtochooseproperwordsorphrasesfillingintothetextaccordingtocontext.Everyitemis1.5marks.Thissectionis30marks.

grammar

Thissectionisadialogue（twospeakers）.Usually,whattheysaidarequestionsandanswers.Tenwordsarelosingfromtheirdialogue.Testtakersshouldwritedownthelosingwordsbythemselvesaccordingtotheirunderstandingofthedialogue.Thereisnomultiplechoiceforthem.Itcanassesscandidate‘soverallgrammarproficiency.Thereare10items.Everyonevalues1.5marks.Therefore,thissectionis15marks.

errorcorrecting

Testtakersareprovidedastudent’scomposition.Thereareseveralerrorsinthecompositionwhichneedtobefindoutandmodified.Usually,tenplacesarewrong.Candidatesfindingouttheerrorsandusingproperformstomodifythemcangetmarks.Totally,therearetenerrorsandtenmarks.

Candidateisgivenatopicorapicture.Heorsheshouldwriteashortessayintermsofthattopic.Thecandidateisexpectedtoproducecoherentandmeaningfultextsusingappropriateformat,registerandstyle,grammaticalstructuresandvocabulary.Candidateshouldwriteabout120words.Thefullmarksare25marks.Judgesgivemarksaccordingtothespelling,ideas,grammar,structureandsoon.Thefollowingisadetailedratingscaleofthissection.

6-10marks

Themainideaisshowed.Butthetextistooshort.Therearealsosomeerrorsinspellingorgrammar.

16-20marks

Thetextarecoherentandfluent.Theideaisstatedclearly.Noobviouserrorscanbefound.Butthepaperisuntidy.

21-25marks

Thestructureiscomplete.Theideaisoriginal.Nogrammaticalandspellingerrors.Thepaperistidy.Spellingisgood-looking.
