Mother’sDayisatimeofmemoryandcelebrationforMom.TheearliestMother’sDaycelebrationsdatebacktoancientGreeceinhonourofRhea,theMotherofGods.Duringthe1600s,Englandcelebratedadaycalled“motheringSunday”.CelebratedonthefourthSundayofLent(四旬斋),“motheringSunday”honouredthemothersEngland.

DuringthetimemanyoftheEngland’spoorworkedasservantsforthewealthy.ASmostjobswerelocatedfarfromtheirhomes,theservantswouldliveatthehousesoftheiremployers.OnMotheringSunday,theservantswouldhavethedayoffandwereencouragedtoreturnhomeandspendthedaywiththeirmothers.Aspecialcake,calledthemotheringcake,wasoftenbroughtalong.

AsChristianity(基督教)spreadthroughoutEurope,thecelebrationchangedtohonourthe“MotherChurch”---thespiritualpowerthatgavethemlifeandprotectedthemfromharm.OvertimethechurchfestivalcombinedwithmotheringSundaycelebration.Peoplebeganhonouringtheirmothersaswellasthechurch.

IntheUnitedStatesMother’sDaywasfirstsuggestedin1872byJuliaWardHoweasadaydevotedtopeace.Thenin1907AnaJarvis,fromPhiladelphia,beganacampaign(运动)toestablishanationalMother’sDay.MsJarvispersuadedhermother’schurchinGrafton,VirginiatocelebrateMother’sDayonthesecondanniversaryofhermother’sdeath,the2nddaySundayofMay.BythenextyearMother’sDaywasalsocelebratedinPhiladelphia.
