Therewasnoinbetween.Forme,thismeantthatIalwaysfeltself-consciousaboutbeinggoodatmaths,becausepeoplewouldjustsayitwasbecauseIwasAsian,notbecauseIactuallyworkedhard.

Itmeantthatwheneveraboyaskedmeout,itwasbecausehehadtheyellowfever,andnotbecauseheactuallylikedme.

Itmeantthatforthelongesttime,myidentityhadformedaroundthefactthatIwasdifferent.

AndIthoughtthatbeingAsianwastheonlyspecialthingaboutme.

TheseeffectswereemphasizedbytheplaceswhereIlived.

Don'

tgetmewrong.Onlyasmallpercentageofpeoplewereactuallyracist,or,evenborderlineracist,butthevastmajoritywere

justalittlebitclueless.

IwishthatIhadalwayshadthecouragetospeakoutabouttheseissues.
