TerryFoxwasborninWinnipeg,Canada,onJuly28th,1958.Hewonmanyawardsforplayingsportswhenhewassmall.Hewenttouniversitytobeaphysicaleducationteacher.In1977,however,somethinghappenedthatwasgoingtochangehimforlife.Oneday,hecamehomecomplainingaboutapaininhisknee.Thepainwasreallybadsohewenttothehospital.Therehefoundouthehadcancer.Tostopthespreadofthecancer,doctorshadtocutoffhisleg.
Hereplacedhisoldlegwithanartificialone,andin3weekshewaswalkingagain.Hefeltgoodaboutbeatingcancer.JustbeforehissurgeryhehadreadaboutDickTraum.Thismanhadlostalegtoo,andhehadruntheNewYorkCitymarathon.ThatinspiredTerryFoxfortherestofhislife.
Foxstartedtrainingandranhisfirstmarathonin1979.HisaimistorunallthewayacrossCanadatoraiseonedollarperCanadianforcancerresearch.HestartedonApril12thinStJohn’s,atownontheAtlanticCoast.ByJulyhehadreachedTorontoandhewaswelcomedby10,000supporters.Hekeptgoingwestatthepaceof42kmperday,onhiswaynorth,justontheoutskirtsofThunderBayhehadtostop.Hehadn’tcompletelydefeatedthecancer,andnowithadspreadtohislungs.Hehadtoquitrunningandflybackhomefortreatment.
