Newresearchshowsthattheseswimmersaren’ttheonlyonesopeningup.Accordingtoa
newstudy,moreAmericanadultsthaneverarereportingbeingdisabledbythesymptomsofdepression,anxietyorotheremotionalproblems.
Thereport,publishedThursdayintheAmericanJournalofPublicHealth,foundthatpeoplewhosaidtheycouldn’tperformeverydaytasksorengageinsocialandleisureactivitiesbecauseofamentalillnessincreasedfrom2percentin2001to2.9percentin2016.Thatincreaseamountstonearly2millionmorepeopledisabledbymentaldistressinthepastdecade,thereportsaid.
Althoughpeopledidnotsaytheyfeltmorepsychologicallydistressedcomparedtopastyears,theyreportedthattheirmentalhealthproblemshadagreaterimpactontheirdailylives.
Dr.RaminMojtabai,thestudy’sauthor,saidit’sunclearwhetherthefindingstellatruthofgreatermentaldistressinrecenttimesorpointtoavictoryforpubliceducationabouttheimportanceofacknowledgingmentalillness.
“Itispossiblethatpeoplearerealizingtheeffectsofmentalillnessmoreacutelynowthan
before,”hesaid.“Peoplecouldbebecomingmoreaware.”
