她用刚学不久的中文“你好”和“谢谢”作为开场白和结束语,并以讲故事的方式,与成都中学生分享自己的求学经历,强调教育对年轻人的重要性。

yousomuchforyourwarmwelcome.
Now,beforeIgetstarted,onbehalfofmyselfandmyhusband,Iwanttosaythatour
heartsgoouttoallthosewithlovedonesonMalaysiaAirlinesFlight370.AsIsaid
thispastweekendwhenIspokeatPekingUniversity,weareverymuchkeepingallof
theminourthoughtsandourprayersatthistremendouslydifficulttime.
Sonow,letmestartbythankingyourPrincipal,PrincipalLiu,andyourclassmate,
JuChao,forthatwonderfulintroduction.YourEnglish,JuChao,isexcellent,and
youshouldbeveryproud.Thankyousomuch.(Applause.)AndIwanttothank
allofthestudentsheretoday,boththoseofyouhereinpersonandthoseofyou
joiningremotelyfromacrosstheregion.I’mthrilledtobevisitingyourwonderful
school.
Now,inpreparationforthisvisit,beforeIlefttheU.S.IvisitedtheYuYingSchool.
It’sapublicschoolneartheWhiteHouseinWashington,D.C.,andallofthestudents
atthisschoolstudyChinese.AndImetwiththesixth-gradeclass,kidswhoare11
and12yearsold.TheyhadrecentlytakenatripheretoChina,andtheywere
burstingwithexcitement.Theywereeagertotellmeabouteverythingaboutwhat
theyhadseen.
Buttheyadmittedthatbeforetheirtrip,theyhadallkindsofmisconceptionsabout
China.Theythoughttheywouldseepalacesandtempleseverywheretheywent,but
insteadtheyfoundmassivecitiesfilledwithskyscrapers.Theyweren’tsurethat
they’dlikethefoodhereinChina,buttheyactuallylovedit,andtheylearnedhowto
usechopsticks.Andintheend,oneofthestudentstoldme–-andthisishisquote
--hesaid,“Cominghomewasreallyexciting,butwasatthesametimesad.”
Now,meetingthesestudentsremindedmethatwhenwelivesofarawayfrom
eachother,it’seasytodevelopallkindsofmisconceptionsandstereotypes.It’s
easytofocusonourdifferences–-howwespeakdifferentlanguagesandeat
differentfoodsandobservedifferenttraditions.ButasItraveltheworld,andImeet
youngpeoplefromsomanycountries,I’malwaysstruckbyhowmuchmorewehave
incommon.Andthat’sbeenparticularlytrueduringmyvisithereinChina.
Yousee,thetruthisthatIgrewuplikemanyofyou.Mymom,mydad,my
brotherandI,welivedinatinyapartmentinChicago,whichisoneofthelargest
citiesinAmerica.Myfatherworkedatthelocalwaterplant.Andwedidn’thave
muchmoney,butourlittlehomewasburstingwithlove.Everyevening,myfamily
wouldlaughandsharestoriesoverdinner.We’dplaycardgamesandhavefunfor
hours.Andonsummernights,Iremember,whenourapartmentgottoohot,we’d
allsleepoutsideonourbackporch.
Familymeanteverythingtous,includingourextendedfamily.Mygrandparents
livednearby,andmyelderlygreatauntandunclelivedintheapartmentdownstairs
fromus.Andwhentheirhealthstartedtodeclinemyparentssteppedin,helpingmy
uncleshaveanddresseachmorning,dashingdownstairsinthemiddleofthenightto
checkonmyaunt.
Soinmyfamily,likeinsomanyofyourfamilies,wetookcareofeachother.
Andwhilewecertainlyweren’trich,myparentshadbigdreamsformeandmy
brother.Theyhadonlyahighschooleducationthemselves,buttheywere
determinedtosendusbothtouniversities.
Sotheypouredalloftheirloveandalloftheirhopeintous,andtheyworkedhard.
Theysavedeverypenny.AndIknowthatwasn’teasyforthem,especiallyformy
father.Yousee,myfatherhadaseriousillnesscalledmultiplesclerosis.Andashe
gotsicker,itgotharderforhimtowalk,andittookhimlongertogetdressedinthe
morning.
Butnomatterhowtiredhefelt,nomatterhowmuchpainhewasin,myfather
hardlyevermissedadayofwork,becausehewasdeterminedtogivemeandmy
brotherabetterlife.Andeveryday,likesomanyofyou,Ifelttheweightofmy
parents’sacrificesonmyshoulders.Everyday,Iwantedtomakethemproud.
SowhilemostAmericankidsattendpublicschoolsneartheirhomes,whenitwas
timeformetoattendhighschool,Itookanexamandgotintoaspecialpublichigh
schoolwhereIcouldgetabettereducation.Buttheschoolwasveryfarfrommy
home,soIhadtogetupearlyeverymorningandrideabusforanhour,sometimesan
hourandahalfiftheweatherwasbad.Andeveryafternoon,I’dridethatsamebus
backhomeandthenimmediatelystartmyhomework,oftenstudyinglateintothe
night--andsometimesIwouldwakeupat4:

Anditwasn’teasy.ButwheneverIgottiredordiscouraged,Iwouldjustthink
abouthowhardmyparentswereworkingforme.AndIwouldremembersomething
mymotheralwaystoldme–-shesaid:
“Agoodeducationissomethingthatno
onecantakeawayfromyou.”
Andwhenitwastimeformetoapplytouniversity,Ihadmanyoptions,becausein
America,therearemanykindsofuniversities.Therearefour-yearuniversities.
Therearetwo-yearcommunitycollegeswhicharelessexpensive.Thereare
universitieswhereyoutakeclassesatnightwhileworkingduringtheday.Soyou
don’thavetobeatopstudenttoattendauniversity.Andevenifyourparentsdon’
thavemuchmoneyoryouliveinatinytowninaruralarea,inAmerica,youcanstill
attenduniversity.Andyoucangetscholarshipsandgovernmentloanstohelppay
yourtuition.
SoIattendedPrincetonUniversityformyundergraduatedegree,andIwenton
toHarvardUniversityformygraduatedegreeinlaw.AndwiththosedegreesIwas
abletobecomealawyeratalargelawfirm,andthenIworkedasanexecutiveata
cityhospital,andthenIwasthedirectorofanorganizationthathelpeddisadvantaged
youngpeople.
Andmystoryisn’tunusualinAmerica.Someofourmostfamousathletes,like
LeBronJames,andartists,likethesingerJanelleMonae,camefromstruggling
familieslikemine,asdomanybusinessleaders–likeHowardSchultz.He’sthe
headofacompanycalledStarbucks,whichmanyofyoumayhaveheardof.When
Mr.Schultzwasaboyhisfatherlosthisjob,leavingtheirfamilydestitute.ButMr.
Schultzworkedhard.Hegotascholarshiptoauniversity,andeventuallybuiltthe
largestcoffeehousecompanyintheworld.
Andthenthere’sthisotherguyIknowwhowasraisedbyasinglemotherwho
sometimesstruggledtoaffordfoodfortheirfamily.Butlikeme,thisguygot
scholarshipsandloanstoattenduniversities.Hebecamealawyerandaprofessor,
andthenhewasastatesenatorandthenanationalsenator.Andthen,hebecame
PresidentoftheUnitedStates.ThisguyI’mtalkingaboutismyhusband,Barack
Obama.(Applause.)
ThesestoriesarethestoriesofsomanyAmericans,andofAmericaitself.
BecauseinAmerica,webelievethatnomatterwhereyouliveorhowmuchmoney
yourparentshave,orwhatraceorreligionorethnicityyouare,ifyouworkhardand
believeinyourself,thenyoushouldhaveachancetosucceed.Wealsobelievethat
everyoneisequal,andthatweallhavetherighttosaywhatwethinkandworshipas
wechoose,evenwhenothersdon’tlikewhatwesayordon’talwaysagreewithwhat
webelieve.
Nowofcourse,livinguptotheseidealsisn’talwayseasy.Andtherehavebeen
timesinourhistorywherewehavefallenshort.Manydecadesago,therewere
actuallylawsinAmericathatalloweddiscriminationagainstblackpeoplelikeme,
whoareaminorityintheUnitedStates.Butovertime,ordinarycitizensdecided
thatthoselawswereunfair.Sotheyheldpeacefulprotestsandmarches.They
calledongovernmentofficialstochangethoselaws,andtheyvotedtoelectnew
officialswhosharedtheirviews.
Andslowlybutsurely,Americachanged.Wegotridofthoseunjustlaws.And
today,just50yearslater,myhusbandandIarePresidentandFirstLadyoftheUnited
States.AndthatisreallythestoryofAmerica–-howoverthecourseofourshort
history,throughsomanytrialsandstruggles,wehavebecomemoreequal,more
inclusive,andmorefree.
AndtodayinAmerica,peopleofeveryrace,religionandethnicitylivetogether
andworktogethertobuildabetterlifefortheirchildrenandgrandchildren.Andin
theend,thatdeepyearningtoleavesomethingbetterforthosewhocomeafterus,that
issomethingwealltrulyshare.Infact,there’saChinesesayingthatIlovethatsays,
“Toachievetruehappiness,helpthenextgeneration.”
Andlikesomanyofyourparents,myparentssacrificedsomuchsothatIcouldhave
opportunitiestheyneverdreamedof.Andtoday,asamothermyself,Iwanteven
moreopportunitiesformyowndaughters.Butofcourse,asIalwaystellmy
daughters,withopportunitiescomeobligations.
Andthatistrueforallofyouaswell.Youallhavetheopportunitytoreceivean
educationfromthiswonderfulschool,andyouallhaveanobligationtotakethe
fullestadvantageofthisopportunity.AndIknowthat’sexactlywhatyouallare
doing.
You’rewinningprizesinmathandscience.Here,youarestagingmusical
performancesaroundtheworld.You’revolunteeringinyourcommunities.And
manyofyou
