Butthereisalittleevidencetosupportsuchbeliefs.Statisticsshowthatthepercentageofpeopleinwork,thenumberofhourstheywork,andhowfrequentlytheychangejobshaveremainedremarkablyconstantoverthepast20years.

Thisstabilityshouldnotcomeasasurprise.Therearegoodreasonswhyweshouldnotexpectnewtechnologiestocausethedeathofwork.Newtechnologiesalwayscausejoblosses,butthatisonlypartofthestory.Whatalsoneedstobeunderstoodishowtheyincreasetheamountofworkavailable.

Onewaythishappensisthroughtheincreasesinincomesthataccompanytheuseofnewtechnologies.Withtheintroductionofthesetechnologies,goodandservicescanbeproducedfaster,whichresultsinhigherrealincomesforworkers.Higherincomesthenincreasedemandforotherproductsandconsequentlymoreworkersareneededtomakethem.Additionally,whilenewtechnologiesarelikelytosubstituteforsometypesofworkers,theywillalsoincreasedemandforothertypesofworkers,especiallythosewithhigherlevelskillsandexpertise.

So,theendofworkisnoclosertodaythanatanytimeinthepast.Butthereisstillaneedtokeepdisprovingtheprediction,toreducepeople'
