“Wearebuildingupacatalogueofthedifferentwhistletypestheyuseandtryingtoassociatethemwithbehaviourlikeforaging,resting,socialisingandthecommunicationsofgroupswithcalves,”projectleaderSimonBerrowsaid.“Essentiallywearebuildingupwhatislikeadictionaryofwordstheyuseorsoundstheymake.”

Berrow,amarinebiologist,saidthedolphins’clicksareusedtofindtheirwayaroundandlocateprey.Thewhistlesarecommunications.“Theydoawholerangeofothersoundlikebarks,groansandakindofgunshot,”hesaid.“Thegunshotisanintensepulseofsound.Spermwhalesuseittostuntheirprey.”

“WhenIfirsthearditIwassurprisedasIthoughtspermwhalesweretheonlyspecieswhousedit.Wecanspeculatethedolphinsareusingitforthesamereasonasthespermwhales.”Borrowsaid.
