InNovember2011,NotchofficiallycompletedworkonMinecraft1.0,“anopenworldgamethathasnospecificgoalsfortheplayertoaccomplish”(Gallegos),whichturnedouttobeahugesuccess(McCarthy).McCarthyfirstregardsitssuccessasamysterysinceit’sonlyanindiegamewithoutanyadvertisingbuthefinallypointsoutthatthesuccessisjustbecauseplayers“havefreereintobuild,build,build”(par.18).Peopledoenjoythefreedomtothinkandcreate.Ineffect,thesituationisanalogicalwhenpeopleencounterpoems.“WhoIsaPoet”and“AnotherReasonIDon’tKeepaGunintheHouse”aretwopoemsthatbothtakeadvantagesofaudience’simaginationinordertoconveyitsmessage.However,“WhoIsaPoet”providesmorefreedomforaudiencetounderstandandtoimagine,thusgivingamoreeffectiveargument,while“AnotherReasonIDon’tKeepaGunintheHouse”restrictsaudience’simaginationinthe
author’sworldbygivingadetailedimaginaryscene.Thedetailedreasonswhy“WhoIsaPoet”isbetterthan“AnotherReasonIDon’tKeepaGunintheHouse”willbegraduallyrevealedbyanalyzingthelogos,ethos,andpathosinthosepoems.
BillyCollinswrites“AnotherReasonIDon’tKeepaGunintheHouse”inanimaginarilynarrativeway,encouragingpeopletoseekjoyamidstsorrow.Inthepoem,theneighbors’dogkeepsbarkingwhichalmostdrivesthespeakercraze.Thenhefallsintohisimaginaryworldwheretheannoyingdogbecomesasoloist.Thestorythatthespeakerusesimaginationtomakeanirritatingdogsofunnytellspeoplenottobestuckbylittleannoyanceandtrytomakelifehappier.

Thelogos,orthewidthofapoem’scontextmaywellconstrainthewidthofaudience’s
thoughts,thusplayinganimportantroleinanargument.Theobjectsareverylimitedin“AnotherReasonIDon’tKeepaGunintheHouse”-justtheneighbors’barkingdogandthefictionaldogsoloist.Althoughthat“dog”islikelytobearepresentofalltheannoyance,whichprovidesalittlemoreextent,thepoemisfarmorerestrictedincomparisonwith“WhoIsaPoet”.In“WhoIsaPoet”,Ró

ewicz).Theliteralcontradictioncanleadaudienceintodeeperthoughts,thusbeingcapableofsendingmoremessageswhicharenotonthesurfaceofthepoem.Thiskindofsentence-pairsalsoappearsinthebeginningofthenovelTaleofTwoCities-“Itwasthebestoftimes,itwastheworstoftimes,itwastheageofwisdom,itwastheageoffoolishness”(Dickens8),whicharearecognizedextraordinaryopeningthatconstructsasolemnatmosphere.Suchatmospherehelpspeoplethinkdeeply.
Thepathosisthechoiceofpersoninpoems.“AnotherReasonIDon’tKeepaGunintheHouse”usesthefirstpersonwhichconstrainsthethoughtsofreaders,while“WhoIsaPoet”isinthethirdpersonsothatitcanfreethereaders’thoughts.Usingthefirstpersonisknowntobeagoodmethodtotellstories,though;
it’snotagoodideatoapplythefirstpersoninanargument.Theuseof“I”willabsorbreadersintothestoryandtrapthemwithinthestory.Noticethat
