willunderstandtheappealofPoemsontheUnderground.Someyearsago,afewacquaintanceswholivedandworkedinLondon,whousedtheTubeandlovedpoetry,decidedthatitwouldbepleasanttoreadafewlinesbytheirfavouritepoetsastheytravelledaroundbyTube,insteadofjustglancingupwardsatthetiresomeadvertisements.TheUndergroundhadasurplusofadvertisingspaceonthetrains.Theysuggestedfillingtheblankspaceswithpoems,fortheentertainmentofthetravellingpublic.
LondonUndergroundapprovedoftheidea,andoncesponsorshadbeenfoundtopaytheexpensesforhalfthespaces,theyagreedtopayfortheotherhalf.So,inJanuary1986,PoemsontheUndergroundwasofficiallylaunchedatAldwychstation,inthecentreofLondon.Manyofthosewholeftthemorningdaylightandthedampstreetsabove,anddescendedthroughtheticketbarrierstotheshabbyoldUndergroundplatformsawtheusualsigns—TICKETSANDTRAINS,THISWAYDOWN,CAUTION!

tarbitrarybutspeciallychosen.ItcateredforalltastesandincludedlivinganddeadpoemsfromthehomelandandfromallovertheEnglishspeakingworld,andespeciallypoemswhichhaveassociationswithLondon.
ThesuccessofthePoemsontheUndergroundenterpriseconfirmedthatBritainwasanationofpoetrylovers.HundredsofpeoplecorrespondedwithLondonUndergroundsuggestingpoems,orjusttosaythankyou.InJanuary1989,onthethirdanniversaryafterthefirstpoemsontheUnderground,LondonUndergroundpromisedtodonateallthespacesfree,toincreasethenumberavailable(atleastonepoemineachtraincarriage),andtopayfortheproductioncostsaswell.Theyalsoupdatethepoemseveryfewmonths.PostersofthepoemsdecoratetheBritishCouncillibrariesthroughouttheworld,butthebestwaytoviewthepoemsistoseethemyourself,onwhichevertrainyouchoose,ineveryzoneofthenetwork—forthepriceofanundergroundticket.地铁上的诗
任何沉迷于阅读公交车票或者麦片纸袋的人都会理解地铁上的诗歌的吸引力。
几年前,几个在伦敦生活和工作的熟人,他们经常坐地铁并且喜欢诗歌,他们想在坐着地铁旅行的时候能读到自己最喜欢的诗人所写的诗句而不是仅仅抬头浏览枯燥的广告,那将是一件多么惬意的事情。
地铁的火车上还有一些剩余的广告空位。
他们建议将这些空位用诗歌填满,目的是为了大众旅行时的娱乐休闲。
伦敦地铁局同意了这个主意,并且一旦找到支付其中一半费用的赞助商,他们愿意支付另一半的费用。
因此,1986年1月,“地铁上的诗”在伦敦市中心奥德维奇车站正式开始。
很多人离开上午的晨光和潮湿的街道,穿过检票处走至破旧的地铁站台,这时就会看见常见的标语——车票和火车,沿着这条路走下去,小心!
不要攀爬铁轨,禁止站立,关门——呈现出一种特殊的文学意义。
这里有咖啡、油炸圈饼还有葡萄酒,供应在乘客通常等车时坐的长凳上。
但作为预展的印有第一批诗歌的车驶过来时,乘客们上车,开车后几分钟内,车厢内满是人们异口同声读诗的欢快的声音,这些诗有雪莱的、彭斯的,当然还有他们自己的。
从书本中走出来,同广告放在一起使得这些诗歌焕发了新的生命。
乘车上下班的人们喜欢这个主意,挤在拥挤的中心线路火车上读济慈的《游历在金色的国度里》,或者在汉莫斯密斯与皮卡迪利大街之间努力记住一首十四行诗。
这些诗不是随意选择的,而是经过了特别挑选。
它迎合了不同的口味,包括人们经常读的和不经常读的诗,有英国的还有来自整个英语世界的,尤其是同伦敦有关的一些诗歌。
“地铁上的诗”这一计划的成功证实了英国是一个热爱诗歌的国度。
