I

Myhairisgrey,butnotwithyears,

    Norgrewitwhite

    Inasinglenight,

Asmen'shavegrownfromsuddenfears:

Mylimbsarebow'd,thoughnotwithtoil,

    Butrustedwithavilerepose,

Fortheyhavebeenadungeon'sspoil,

    Andminehasbeenthefateofthose

Towhomthegoodlyearthandair

Arebann'd,andbarr'd-forbiddenfare;

Butthiswasformyfather'sfaith

Isuffer'dchainsandcourteddeath;

Thatfatherperish'datthestake

Fortenetshewouldnotforsake;

Andforthesamehislinealrace

Indarknessfoundadwellingplace;

Wewereseven-whonowareone,

    Sixinyouth,andoneinage,

Finish'dastheyhadbegun,

    ProudofPersecution'srage;

Oneinfire,andtwoinfield,

Theirbeliefwithbloodhaveseal'd,

TherearesevenpillarsofGothicmould,

InChillon'sdungeonsdeepandold,

Therearesevencolumns,massyandgrey,

Dimwithadullimprison'dray,

Asunbeamwhichhathlostitsway,

Andthroughthecreviceandthecleft

Ofthethickwallisfallenandleft;

Creepingo'erthefloorsodamp,

Likeamarsh'smeteorlamp:

Andineachpillarthereisaring,

    Andineachringthereisachain;

Thatironisacankeringthing,

    Forintheselimbsitsteethremain,

Withmarksthatwillnotwearaway,

TillIhavedonewiththisnewday,

Whichnowispainfultotheseeyes,

Whichhavenotseenthesunsorise

Foryears-Icannotcountthemo'er,

Ilosttheirlongandheavyscore

Whenmylastbrotherdroop'danddied,

AndIlaylivingbyhisside.

Theychain'duseachtoacolumnstone,

Andwewerethree-yet,eachalone;

Wecouldnotmoveasinglepace,

Wecouldnotseeeachother'sface,

Butwiththatpaleandlividlight

Thatmadeusstrangersinoursight:

Andthustogether-yetapart,

Fetter'dinhand,butjoin'dinheart,

'Twasstillsomesolaceinthedearth

Ofthepureelementsofearth,

Tohearkentoeachother'sspeech,

Andeachturncomfortertoeach

Withsomenewhope,orlegendold,

Orsongheroicallybold;
