fortytoimagineatimewhenhigh-qualityartscriticismcouldbefoundinmost
bit-citynewspapers.Yetaconsiderablenumberofthemostsignificantcollectionsof
criticismpublishedinthe20thcenturyconsistedinlargepartofnewspaperreviews.
Toreadsuchbookstodayistomarvelatthefactthattheirlearnedcontentswereonce
deemedsuitableforpublicationingeneral-circulationdailies.
WeareevenfartherremovedfromtheunfocusednewspaperreviewspublishedinEnglandbetweentheturnofthe20thcenturyandtheeveofWorldWar2,atatimewhennewsprintwasdirt-cheapandstylishartscriticismwasconsideredanornamenttothepublicationsinwhichitappeared.Inthosefar-offdays,itwastakenforgrantedthatthecriticsofmajorpaperswouldwriteindetailandatlengthabouttheeventstheycovered.Theirswasaserousbusiness.andeventhosereviewswhoworetheirlearninglightly,likeGeorgeBernardShawandErnestNewman,couldbetrustedtoknowwhattheywereaout.Thesemenbelievedinjournalismasacalling,andwereproudtobepublishedinthedailypress.'
