Researchers,ledbySarahJelbertattheuniversityofAucklandinNewZealand,presentedsixcrowswithtubesfilledwithwater.Insidethetubes,awormorpieceofmeatonapieceofwoodwasfloating,justoutofreachofthecrow.Infrontofthetubes,theresearchersarrangedabunchofheavyrubbererasersthatwouldsink,andlightplasticobjectsthatwouldfloat.Thecrowsfoundoutthattheycoulddroptheheavyobjectsintothetubesinordertoraisethewaterlevelandgettheirsnack.

However,thebirdshandledawkwardlyinexperimentsinwhichtheycouldchoosetodropobjectsineitherawidetubeoranarrowtubetogetasnack,theresearcherssaid.Droppingobjectsintonarrowtubewouldliftthewaterlevelbyagreateramountandputthetreatwithinreachafterjusttwodrops.Incontrast,ittookaroundsevendropstoraisethesnacktothesamelevelinthewidetube.Thecrowsobviouslydidn’trealizethis,andmostofthemwentforthewidetubefirst.

Therearegoodreasonsnottofollowthosebadexamples.Humansaresociallyconnectedwithnature.Havingrelationshipswithotherpeopleisanimportantpartofbeinghuman—andhavingempathyisimportanttothoserelationships.Researchershavealsofoundthatempatheticteenagersalwayshavehighself-respect.Besides,empathycanbehelpfulforloneliness,sadness,anxiety,andfear.

Empathyisalsonecessaryforagoodleader.Infact,Freedsays,manytopcompaniesreportthatempathyisonethemostimportantthingstheylookforinnewmanagers.Socialskills—includingempathy—areakindof“emotional(情感的)intelligence"thatwillhelpyousucceedinmanyareasoflife.“Testsresultsareimportant.Butifyoudon’thaveemotionalintelligence,youwon’tbeassuccessfulinworkorinyourlovelife,”shesays.

Fifteen-year-oldswhoseparentsoftenreadbookswiththemduringtheirfirstyearofprimaryschoolgetmuchhigherscoresinPISA2009thanstudentswhoseparentsdon’toftenreadwiththemornotatall.Parents’concernfortheirchildrenisstronglyconnectedwithbetterresultsinPISA.

AccordingtoSchleicher,theleaderoftheteam,justaskingyourchildrenhowtheirschooldaywasandshowinggreatinterestintheirlearningcanhelpalot.Itissomethingeveryparentcando,nomatterwhattheireducationlevelis.
