TuYouyou,ascientistattheChinaAcademyofChineseMedicalSciences,

TheLaskerAwardshaveexistedsince1945.Thewinnersarealwayspeoplewhohavereallyhelpedustounderstand,recognize,treat,cureandpreventdisease.Tuwaspresentedthe2011LaskerClinicalMedicalResearchAwardonSeptember23.Shediscoveredadrugcalledartemisinin(青蒿素).Thedrugisnowwidelyusedagainstmalaria(疟疾).

Tuandhercolleaguesjoinedagovernmentprojecttofindanewmalariadruginthelate1960sduringthe“culturalrevolution”(1966~1976).Theymade380herbalextracts(草药提取物)from200potentialrecipes.TherecipescamefromtraditionalChinesemedicalbooks.Theteamthentestedthemonmalaria-infectedmice.FinallyTubecameinterestedinanextractoftheplantqinghao,orsweetwormwood(青蒿).

AccordingtoanancientChinesemedicinebook,qinghaowasonceusedtotreatmalaria.However,theextracttheymadeinthelabdidn’tworkwell.Tuthoughttheeffectiveingredientinqinghaomaybedestroyedbyhightemperatures.Therefore,Tutriedtomaketheextractwithether(乙醚)whichhasamuchlowerboilingpointthanwater.
