Butwhiletheabovetheoryisarguablythemostwidespread,it’scertainlynottheonlyone.Somescientistshavesuggestedthatcrownshynessisamechanismtostopthespreadingofleaf-eatinginsects.Thesepestshavebeenknowntoworktogetherandcreatestructuresthatextendupto10cmoffoftreebranches,inordertoreachotherplants,sothegapsarethetreesnaturaldefensemethod.

OneMalaysianscholarstudiedmanytrees,butfoundnotracesofabrasions,despitetheirclearcrownshyness.Instead,hesuggeststhatthegrowingtipsofthetreesweresensitivetolightlevelsandstoppedgrowingwhentheygottooclosetoothertrees.Plantsareabletosensehowclosetheyaretootherplantsandinordertogetmorelight,theygiveoffsomechemicaltostopothertreesfromgrowingtooclose.
