Nobodyknowstheanswerforsure,butmanyatetryingtofindout.Therearemanytheoriestoexplainthismystery.Ithasevenbeensuggestedthespacealiensmayhaveplayedaroleregardingthesegiantstatues.AnothertheoryrelatestothefactthatEasterIslandwasinhabitedbyPolynesianseafarers,whotraveledthousandofmilesintheircanoes,guidedbythestars,thecolorofskyandthesun,theshapesofclouds,andthepresenceofbirdsmakingflightsouttoseaseekingfood.ThePolynesiansfirstarrivedontheislandin499A.D.However,theoceancurrentswhichcarriedthemtherewouldmottakethemback.Theyweretrappedand,havingarrivedthere,couldnotleave.ThePolynesiansprobablecaredthestatuesthemselves,perhapsasreligioussymbols.

Thestatuesappeartohavebeencarvedoutofthetopedgeofwallsofavolcanoontheisland.Afterastatuewascarved,itmayhavebeenrolledordraggeddowntothebaseofthevolcano.Thenitwasputupright,andropesweretiedaroundit.Usingapulleysystem,thestatuewasmovestoitsintendeddestination.
