Thisguideisacompilationofreporteddefects,theirresolutionsandminorupgradestothe1997editionofITU-TRecommendationQ.752.ItincludesallapprovedcorrigendaandisintendedtobeanadditionalauthoritativesourceofinformationforimplementorstobereadinconjunctionwiththeRecommendationitself.
1.3Scopeoftheguide
Thisguiderecordstheresolutionsofdefectsinthefollowingcategories:
•editorialerrors;
•technicalerrors,suchasomissions,inconsistencies,etc.;and
•ambiguities.
Inaddition,thisguiderecordsminorenhancementstotheRecommendationinthefollowingcategories:
•increasedinteroperability;and
•deploymentpossibilityinnewenvironments.

5.2.2Anexampleofcollectionofmeasurements
AmodeltodescribethecollectionofItems13.7and13.9,usedtoexplainpossiblemeasurementtechniquesbutwhichisnotintendedtospecifyimplementation,isasfollows:
Supposeasystemcollectsmeasurementsinanumbersof"measurementcentres".Ameasurementcentrecanbedefinedasapointinthesystemthatlaunches,orobservesdirectlythelaunchingof,aTCtransaction,anditalsoeitherfinishesthetransaction,orobservesdirectlyitspassing.Thispointisassumedalsotobeabletocountthenumberoffree,frozenandthawingtransactionidentitieswithwhichitisconcerned.Thusinamultiprocessorsystem,theremightbeone(ormore)measurementcentre(s)perprocessorperApplicationEntitydefinition,whichisresponsibleforlaunchingallthetransactions(instances)ofthatApplicationEntity.Inorderformeasurementscollectedbyallthecentrestorefertothesameinterval,itisassumedthateachcentrehasaclockwhich"ticks"ataratesufficientlyhightobeabletomeasurewiththerequiredprecision.Theclocksarealsoassumedtobesynchronizedtowithinoneclocktick(iftheywerenot,furthercalculationswouldbeneededtodeterminetheoverallprecision).Ifnecessary,eachcentrewouldhavean"active"setofmeasurements,andanothersettakeninthepreviousmeasurementinterval,whichmightbeawaitingcollection.
Measurement13.7isthemeannumberofopentransactions,estimatedoverameasurementinterval,observationsaretakenateachnewtransactionduringtheinterval.
ThemeasurementscanbeoverthewholeApplicationEntity,orateachcentre,andthenaccumulatedforthewholeApplicationEntity.
DefineacumulativetotalAcofopentransactions(thisissetto0atthestartofeachmeasurementinterval),anddefineaasthenumberofopentransactionsatanytime.aissetto0atsysteminitialization,itisincrementedateachtransactionarrival,anddecrementedwheneachtransactionleaves.Definenasthenumberofnewtransactionsarrivingduringthemeasurementinterval(whichissetto0atthestartofeachinterval).

Item13.9,thecumulativemeandurationoftransactions,requiresthatthosetransactionsthatwereopenatthestartofmeasurements(butnotthoseopenatthestartoftheinterval),beexcludedfromthemeasurements.(Itwouldbepossibletoincludethoseopenatthestartofmeasurements,ifsomeestimateoftheiragecouldbemade,butforsimplicitythisisnotconsideredhere.)Inordertodothis,thetransactionrecorditselfneedsanindicatorequaltoanoverall(measurementcentre)value
setwhenmeasurementsstart,andunsetwhenmeasurementsfinish,inordertoexcludetransactionswhichstartedbeforemeasurementsdid.
Forthismeasurement,thefollowingvariablesarekeptateachmeasurementcentre:
–ArunningcumulativetransactionlengthtimeTc.Thisissetto0atthestartofmeasurements,butiskeptrunningduringthesuccessivemeasurementintervals.
–AcumulativetransactionarrivalcounterRc.Thisisinitializedto0atthestartofmeasurements,andiskeptrunningduringthesuccessivemeasurementintervals.
–Acountertimewhichissetto0atthestartofmeasurements,andisincrementedby1foreachclocktick.
Themeasurementisperformedasfollows:
1)whenatransactionarrives,set

2)whenatransactionfinishes,ifitstartedatorafterthestartofmeasurements,set

3)attheendofthemeasurementinterval,reportTc,RcanduseafromItem13.7(butwithainitializedatthestartofmeasurements).Themeandurationoftransactionsmeasuredinthisintervalis
forthecentre,withappropriateextensionsfortheoverallmean.
Apossiblealternativemeasurementcouldbethemeandurationofnewtransactionsoccurringintheinterval(providingthosetransactionsopenatthestartoftheinterval,andlongtransactions,werecatered-forseparately).Ifthiswererequired,thensomeformof"phase"indicationwouldberequiredtobekeptineachtransact
