1.2Background

Thisguideisacompilationofreporteddefects,theirresolutionsandminorupgradestothe1997editionofITU-TRecommendationQ.752.ItincludesallapprovedcorrigendaandisintendedtobeanadditionalauthoritativesourceofinformationforimplementorstobereadinconjunctionwiththeRecommendationitself.

1.3Scopeoftheguide

Thisguiderecordstheresolutionsofdefectsinthefollowingcategories:

•editorialerrors;

•technicalerrors,suchasomissions,inconsistencies,etc.;and

•ambiguities.

Inaddition,thisguiderecordsminorenhancementstotheRecommendationinthefollowingcategories:

•increasedinteroperability;and

•deploymentpossibilityinnewenvironments.

Item13.7isameasurementofthemeannumberofopentransactionsintheinterval.Anopentransactionisonetowhichatransactionidentityhasbeenallocated,andthisidentityisnotyetfrozen.

Measurement13.9（thecumulativemeandurationoftransactions）isthemeandurationforalltransactionsthatbeganbetweenthestartofmeasurementsandtheendofthemeasurementinterval.Itincludesthetimefromopeningthetransactiontotheendoftheinterval,forthosetransactionsthatdidnotcloseduringtheinterval.Here,thetransactiondurationisdefinedasthetimefromallocationofthetransactionidentitytofreezingit.

5.2.2Anexampleofcollectionofmeasurements

AmodeltodescribethecollectionofItems13.7and13.9,usedtoexplainpossiblemeasurementtechniquesbutwhichisnotintendedtospecifyimplementation,isasfollows:

Supposeasystemcollectsmeasurementsinanumbersof"measurementcentres".Ameasurementcentrecanbedefinedasapointinthesystemthatlaunches,orobservesdirectlythelaunchingof,aTCtransaction,anditalsoeitherfinishesthetransaction,orobservesdirectlyitspassing.Thispointisassumedalsotobeabletocountthenumberoffree,frozenandthawingtransactionidentitieswithwhichitisconcerned.Thusinamultiprocessorsystem,theremightbeone（ormore）measurementcentre（s）perprocessorperApplicationEntitydefinition,whichisresponsibleforlaunchingallthetransactions（instances）ofthatApplicationEntity.Inorderformeasurementscollectedbyallthecentrestorefertothesameinterval,itisassumedthateachcentrehasaclockwhich"ticks"ataratesufficientlyhightobeabletomeasurewiththerequiredprecision.Theclocksarealsoassumedtobesynchronizedtowithinoneclocktick（iftheywerenot,furthercalculationswouldbeneededtodeterminetheoverallprecision）.Ifnecessary,eachcentrewouldhavean"active"setofmeasurements,andanothersettakeninthepreviousmeasurementinterval,whichmightbeawaitingcollection.

Measurement13.7isthemeannumberofopentransactions,estimatedoverameasurementinterval,observationsaretakenateachnewtransactionduringtheinterval.

ThemeasurementscanbeoverthewholeApplicationEntity,orateachcentre,andthenaccumulatedforthewholeApplicationEntity.

DefineacumulativetotalAcofopentransactions（thisissetto0atthestartofeachmeasurementinterval）,anddefineaasthenumberofopentransactionsatanytime.aissetto0atsysteminitialization,itisincrementedateachtransactionarrival,anddecrementedwheneachtransactionleaves.Definenasthenumberofnewtransactionsarrivingduringthemeasurementinterval（whichissetto0atthestartofeachinterval）.

Item13.9,thecumulativemeandurationoftransactions,requiresthatthosetransactionsthatwereopenatthestartofmeasurements（butnotthoseopenatthestartoftheinterval）,beexcludedfromthemeasurements.（Itwouldbepossibletoincludethoseopenatthestartofmeasurements,ifsomeestimateoftheiragecouldbemade,butforsimplicitythisisnotconsideredhere.）Inordertodothis,thetransactionrecorditselfneedsanindicatorequaltoanoverall（measurementcentre）value

setwhenmeasurementsstart,andunsetwhenmeasurementsfinish,inordertoexcludetransactionswhichstartedbeforemeasurementsdid.

Forthismeasurement,thefollowingvariablesarekeptateachmeasurementcentre:

–ArunningcumulativetransactionlengthtimeTc.Thisissetto0atthestartofmeasurements,butiskeptrunningduringthesuccessivemeasurementintervals.

–AcumulativetransactionarrivalcounterRc.Thisisinitializedto0atthestartofmeasurements,andiskeptrunningduringthesuccessivemeasurementintervals.

–Acountertimewhichissetto0atthestartofmeasurements,andisincrementedby1foreachclocktick.

Themeasurementisperformedasfollows:

1）whenatransactionarrives,set

2）whenatransactionfinishes,ifitstartedatorafterthestartofmeasurements,set

3）attheendofthemeasurementinterval,reportTc,RcanduseafromItem13.7（butwithainitializedatthestartofmeasurements）.Themeandurationoftransactionsmeasuredinthisintervalis

forthecentre,withappropriateextensionsfortheoverallmean.

Apossiblealternativemeasurementcouldbethemeandurationofnewtransactionsoccurringintheinterval（providingthosetransactionsopenatthestartoftheinterval,andlongtransactions,werecatered-forseparately）.Ifthiswererequired,thensomeformof"phase"indicationwouldberequiredtobekeptineachtransact
