TheXR200produceshighlevelsofradiationandmustbeoperatedbyqualifiedpersonnelwhomustreadtheWarningandOperationssectionofthemanualbeforeoperatingthedevice.
TheXR200isasmall,lightweightx-raygeneratorthatoperatesonitsownremovablebatterypack.TheXR200isapulsedx-raydevicethatproducesx-raypulsesofveryshortduration(60nanoseconds).Itproducesarelativelylowdoseratecomparabletoa1.0maconstantpotentialmachine.TheenergyproducedbytheXR200isupto150KVP,whichmakesitpossibletoradiographupto%inch(1.3cm)ofsteel.
XR200standardaccessoriesaretwokeys,twobatterypacks,andonebatterycharger.Remotecable,carryingcase,andfilmdevelopingequipmentarealsocommonaccessories.
2.1WARNINGS
2.2TheXR200isanindustrialtypex-raygeneratorthatproduceshazardousradiationwhenenergized.
2.3Itisunlawfultousethisequipmenttointentionallyexposehumansortouseitformedicalradiography.
2.4TheXR200issubjecttostateregulationandregistration.Contactyourstateboardofhealthbeforeoperatingequipment.
2.5TheoperatoroftheXR200mustbeproperlytrainedtosafelyoperatetheunit.
2.6UnauthorizedpersonnelshouldnothaveaccesstotheXR200.
2.7DevelopandcloselyfollowasafeoperatingsystemforusingtheXR200.
Thesafeoperatingsystemmustensurethatnooneisexposedtoradiationabovethepermissiblelimitswhichare2mR(0.02mSv)perhouror100mR(1mSv)peryearforamemberofthepublic.(RefertoSpecifications,page20,forX-rayoutputandExclusionZone,page4,forstandoffdistances.)
ThesafeoperatingsystemmustensuretheXR200isusedwithinfederalandstateguidelines.
2.8AlloperatorsandusersoftheXR200x-raymachinemustwearapersonalradiationmonitoringdevice,suchasaTLD(thermoluminescentdosimeter),filmbadge,and/orapocketdosimeterconsistentwiththeappropriatefederal,territorialorprovincialstandards(note:
anelectronicdosimeterwillnotdetecttheXR200radiationpulses).
DuetotheshortpulsewidthoftheXR200,surveymetersoftheGeiger-Muellerandscintillatortypedonotaccuratelydetecttheradiationemittedfromthex-raysource.
Surveymetersshouldbeoftheionizationtypeandshouldbeusedintheintegrationmode.SurveymetersmustnotbeusedintheratemodebecausetheXR200doesnotproduceconstantradiation.TheXR200producesveryhighratesofradiationforveryshortperiodsoftimeresultingineitherunrealisticallyhighreadingsornoreadingsforasurveymeterinratemode.
2.9TheXR200hasnoexplosionproofratingandshouldnotbeusedinanexplosiveatmosphere.TheSparkGapisventedtotheairandcouldbeasourceofignition.

3.1HIGHVOLTAGEPULSER/TUBEHEAD.ThemainbodyoftheXR200isthetubeheadwhichcontainsthetubecavity,coldcathodetypeX-raytube,sparkgap,highvoltagecapacitor,andtransformer.ThecollimatorlocatedonthefrontoftheheadholdsthetubeinthetubecavityandlimitstheX-raybeamto40degrees.
3.2BASE.ThebaseoftheXR200containsthebaseplate,tripodmount,tripodmountreleasebutton,andidentificationlabel.Thetripodmountcontainsthreaded%-20insertthatcanbeattachedtoastandardcameratripod.Thereleasebuttonallowsthetripodmounttostayonthetripodhead,whileremovingtheXR200.Alabelidentifyingthemodel,manufacturer,andserialnumberislocatedonthebottomoftheXR200base.

Theblockdiagramonpage9illustrateshowtheXR200functions.ThefollowingsequenceofeventstakesplaceeachtimetheXR200isfired.
1.Userinitiatesoperationofthemachine.
2.Thecontrolsectionsendsasignaltotheconvertersectiontobeginoscillating.
3.Onceoscillating,theconvertersectionchangesthe14.4voltsDCto22KhzAC.
4.ThetransformerchargestheHighVoltageCapacitortoabout8000volts.
5.ThesparkgaparcsaftertheHighVoltageCapacitorreachespropervoltage.
6.Thepulsedetectorsignalsthecontrolblockthattheunithaspulsed.
7.AstheHighVoltageSwitchisclosed,ahighvoltagetransientofabout150,000voltsand50nanosecondsindurationisappliedacrossthex-raytubegeneratingx-rays.
TheclosingoftheHighVoltageSwitchproducesanaudiblesnappingsound.TheXR200cannotproducex-rayswithoutthesnappingsoundandconverselythesnappingsoundservesasawarningthattheXR200isfunctioning.Theoperatorshouldbecomefamiliarwiththecharacteristicsound.
Thisunitgeneratesx-raysthroughhighvoltagebombardmentofatungstentarget.TheXR200doesnotcontainradioactivematerials.Allthehighvoltageiscontainedwithinthealuminumcanisterandaslongasthecanisterisnotpuncturedandthecollimatorisontheheadtheoperatorisnotexposedtodangerousvoltages.

Theoperatorshouldalwaysstandatleast10feetbehindtheX-rayunitwhileitispulsingandclearallpersonnelatleast100ft.fromthefrontoftheunit.Seethediagramonpage4formoredetailsregardingexclusionzoneandsafeoperatingdistances.Closelyfollowallproceduresinthesafeoperatingsystem.
5.3OPERATINGPROCEDURES:
Operatingproceduresvarydependingonthetypeofimagingsystemused.TheXR200canbeusedwithREMOTECABLEorTIMEDELAYwhenusedwithfilmbasedsystemsorComputedRadiography(PhosphorPlate)systems.TheXR200shouldbeusedintheREALTIMEMODEwhenusedwithDirectRadiographysystems(CCD,AmorphousSiliconorAmorphousSeleniumplates,CMOSDetectors).
5.4REMOTECABLEOPTION
1.AttachafullychargedbatterypackintothebackoftheXR200.
2.PlugtheremotecableintoXR200.
3.PlacetheimagingplateorcassettewithfilmnegativedirectlybehindtheobjecttobeX-rayed.Makesurethecassetteorimagingplateisclosetotheobject.DistancebetweenobjectandcassettewilldistorttheX-rayimage.
4.PlacetheXR200twotofourfeetinfrontoftheobjectwiththefrontoftheXR200pointingdirectlyattheobject.
