Ms.Carsonthendevotedherselffull-timetoresearchandwriting.Onethingmuchonhermindwastheeffectofmoderntechnologyonthenaturalenvironment.Oneday,adistressedfriendwrotehertosaythataplanespraying(喷洒)DDThadflownoverheryard,andthenextdayseveralbirdslaydead.Carsondecidedtoact.

Forfouryearsshestudiedtheuseofpesticides(杀虫剂)intheUnitedStates,andthenshewroteSilentSpring.

InherbookMs.Carsonsaidthatthesepesticideswouldharmmuchmorethaninsects.Sheexplainedthatthesepoisonswouldpollutetheenvironment.“Eveniftheireffectsarenotimmediatelyobservable,theyremainforyearsinthewaterandthesoil,andtheybecomepartofthefoodeatenbyanimalsandhumans.Besides,afteratime,insectsdevelopimmunitytopesticides,”shesaid.
