TobiasWolff(1945—)

TobiasWolffwasborninAlabamain1945.Hisparentsdivorcedwhenhewasaboy.Wolff’smotherretainedcustodyofhim.Asachild,Wolfftraveledwithhismother,Rosemary,tothePacificNorthwest,wheresheremarried.GrowingupinthePacificNorthwest,youngTobiassoonwasforcedtoendurelifeunderhisstrictandcruelstepfather.Hiseffortstogetawayfromhisstepfatherledtohisself-transformation.ThatperiodofWolff’slifeisrecountedinThisBoy’sLife:

AMemoir,whichwaslatermadeintoafilm.HeliveswithhisfamilyinupstateNewYorkandteacheswritingatSyracuseUniversity.

From1964through1968,Wolffservedasalieutenant(陆军中尉)withthe.ArmySpecialForces(GreenBerets)inVietnam.HelaterrecountedhiswartimeexperiencesinthememoirInthePharaoh’sArmy:

MemoirsoftheLostWar.

In1972Wolffearnedhis.andthenhis.fromOxfordUniversitywithFirstClassHonorsinEnglishthreeyearslater.

HeistheauthoroftheshortnovelTheBarracks(兵营)Thief,whichwonthe1985PEN/FaulknerAward;twocollectionsofshortstories,BackintheWorld(collecting“SayYes”)andIntheGardenoftheNorthAmericanMartyrs,whichreceivedtheSaintLawrenceAwardforfictionin1982.

TheJimCrowlawswerestateandlocallawsintheUnitedStatesenactedbetween1876and1965.Theymandatedracialsegregationinallpublicfacilities,withasupposedly"separatebutequal"statusforblackAmericans.Inreality,thisledtotreatmentandaccommodationsthatwereusuallyinferiortothoseprovidedforwhiteAmericans,systematizinganumberofeconomic,educationalandsocialdisadvantages.

Racialsegregation,called“JimCrow”,excludedblacksfrompublictransportandfacilities,jobs,juries,andneighborhoods.Blackshadseparatehospitals,prisons,orphanages孤儿院,parksandpools足球场.The19thcenturyendedwiththeracesfirmlysegregated—culturallyandlegally.

MainIdea:

Thetextismainlyaboutanargumentbetweenhusbandandwife.Theideaofracismisathemeinthestory,fortheimplicationofthehusband’sracismiswhatcausesthecoupletoquarrel.Thewifedislikesherhusband’sbeliefsthatAfricanAmericansaredifferentfromwhites.HemaintainsthatitisnotthatheisprejudicedagainstAfricanAmericans,butthattheycomefromadifferentculturefromwhitepeople.Thehusband’snegativeresponsetoAnn’squestionofwhetherhewouldmarryherweresheAfricanAmericanindicatesthepervasiveanddestructivenatureofhisracism.Althoughtheargumentendsupwiththehusband’ssuccess,thehusband’sreactiontothisargumentdemonstratesthesecretundercurrentsthatrunthroughtheirrelationships.
