TheselffulfillingprophecyisalsoknownasthePygmalionEffect.ThiscomesfromastorybyOvidaboutPygmalion，whocreatedanivorystatueofhisidealwoman.Andheimmediatelyfellinlovewithit.Hebeggedthegoddesstobreathelifeintothestatueandmakeherhisown.ShegrantedPygmalionhiswish，thestatuecametolifeandthecouplemarriedandlivedhappilyeverafter.

ThestorywasalsothebasisofGeorgeBernardShaw'splay“Pygmalion”．InShaw'splay，ProfessorHenryHigginsclaimshecanturnaCockneyflowergirl，ElizaDoolittle，intoaduchess.But，asElizaherselfpointsouttoHiggins'friendPickering，itisn'twhatshelearnsordoesthatdetermineswhethershewillbecomeaduchess，buthowshe'streated.

Theimplication（运用）ofthePygmalionEffectforleadersandmanagersismassive（巨大的）．Itmeansthattheperformanceofyourteamdependslessonthemthanitdoesonyou.Theperformanceyougetfrompeopleisnomoreorlessthanwhatyouexpect，whichmeansyoumustalwaysexpectthebest.AsGoethesaid，“Treatamanasheisandhewillremainasheis.Treatamanashecanandshouldbeandhewillbecomeashecanandshouldbe.”
