(2)Sometimes,though,itcanbetakentoofar.SubrahmanyanChandrasekhar,forinstance,hadtowaituntil1983towinaprizeforworkhehaddoneinthe1930sonthestructureofstars.Andcautioncansometimesleadtostrangeresults.AlbertEinsteinneverwonaprizeforhistheoryofrelativity.EventhoughsomeprettysuggestiveevidencehadbeenproducedbyArthurEddingtonin1919,relativity—whichhaslaterpassedeveryexperimentaltesteverthrownatit—wasstillconsideredsomewhatriskyandincomprehensible.Anothercriticismconcernsthetraditionthatnomorethanthreepeoplecanshareaprize.Scienceisrarelythisclear-cut.Takethisyear’sphysicsprize,whichrecognizedPeterHiggsforpredictingtheexistenceofthemass-bestowingparticlethatnowbearshisname.(3)Twootherteams—BroutandEnglert,aswellasGuralnik,HagenandKibble—presentedpapersonthesameideatothesamejournalthatpublishedDr.Higg’swork,allwithinafewmonthsofeachother.(4)Intheevent,thecommitteedecidedtohonorDr.Englert(Broutisdead,andthereforeunqualified),whosepaperwasearlierthanDr.Higg’sbutdidnotclearlypredictaparticle,overDr.Guralnikandhisfellowworkers,whoweremorecomprehensivebutpublishedafewweekslater.
