Forminorwounds.Ifthebitebarelybreakstheskin,treatitasaminorwound.Washthewoundthoroughlywithsoapandwater.Applyanantibioticcreamtopreventinfectionandcoverthebitewithacleanbandage.

Fordeepwounds.Ifthebitecreatesadeeppunctureoftheskinortheskinisbadlytornandbleeding,applypressuretostopthebleedingandseeyourdoctor.

Forinfection.Ifyounoticesignsofinfectionsuchasswelling,redness,increasedpainoroozing,seeyourdoctorimmediately.

2.Snakebites

Mostsnakesaren’tpoisonous.Afewexceptionsincludetherattlesnake,coralsnake,watermoccasinandcopperhead.Mostpoisonoussnakeshaveslit-likeeyes.Theirheadsaretriangular,withadepressionorpitmidwaybetweentheeyesandnostrils.

Othercharacteristicsuniquetocertainpoisonoussnakes:

Rattlesnakesmakearattlingsoundbyshakingtheringsattheendoftheirtails.

Watermoccasinshaveawhite,cottonyliningintheirmouths.

Coralsnakeshavered,yellowandblackringsalongthelengthoftheirbodies.

Toreduceyourriskofsnakebites,avoidpickinguporplayingwithanysnakeunlessyou’reproperlytrained.Mostsnakesusuallyavoidpeopleifpossibleandbiteonlywhenthreatenedorsurprised.

Ifyou’rebittenbyasnake:

●Remaincalm.

●Don’ttrytocapturethesnake.

●Drinkingalcoholwhileeating.

●Wearingdentures.Becausedenturesexertlesschewingpressurethannaturalteethandtheyinterferewiththewayfoodfeelsinthemouth,theymakeitmoredifficulttothoroughlychewfood.

Youngchildrentendtoputintotheirmouthsalmostanythingthatfits,sochokingcanoccurunassociatedwithameal.

Panicaccompanieschoking.Thechokingvictim’sfaceoftenassumesanexpressionoffearorterror.Atfirstthevictimmayturnpurple,theeyesmaybulge,andheorshemaywheezeorgasp.

Ifthepersoncancoughfreely,hasnormalskincolorandcanspeak,heorsheisnotchoking.Ifthecoughismorelikeagaspandthepersonisturningblue,heorsheisprobablychoking.Ifindoubt,askthechokingpersonifheorshecantalk.Ifthepersoncanspeak,thenthewindpipeisnotcompletelyblockedandoxygenisreachingthelungs.Ifchokingisoccurring,begintoperformtheHeimlichmaneuver.

ToperformtheHeimlichmaneuveronsomeoneelse:

Standbehindthechokingpersonandwrapyourarmsaroundhisorherwaist.Bendthepersonslightlyforward.

Makeafistwithonehandandplaceitslightlyabovetheperson’snavel.
