ThisisTimFerrisscircaXXXX年A.D.Agetwo.Youcantellbythepowersquat,Iwasaveryconfidentboy--andnotwithoutreason.Ihadaverycharmingroutineatthetime,whichwastowaituntillateintheeveningwhenmyparentsweredecompressingfromahardday'swork,doingtheircrosswordpuzzles,watchingtelevision.Iwouldrunintothelivingroom,jumpuponthecouch,ripthecushionsoff,throwthemonthefloor,screamatthetopofmylungsandrunoutbecauseIwastheIncredibleHulk.(Laughter)Obviously,youseetheresemblance.Andthisroutinewentonforsometime.
WhenIwassevenIwenttosummercamp.Myparentsfounditnecessaryforpeaceofmind.Andatnooneachdaythecamperswouldgotoapond,wheretheyhadfloatingdocks.Youcouldjumpofftheendintothedeepend.Iwasbornpremature.Iwasalwaysverysmall.MyleftlunghadcollapsedwhenIwasborn.AndI'vealwayshadbuoyancyproblems.Sowaterwassomethingthatscaredmetobeginwith.ButIwouldgoinonoccasion.Andononeparticularday,thecamperswerejumpingthroughinnertubes,Theyweredivingthroughinnertubes.AndIthoughtthiswouldbegreatfun.SoIdovethroughtheinnertube,andthebullyofthecampgrabbedmyankles.AndItriedtocomeupforair,andmylowerbackhitthebottomoftheinnertube.AndIwentwildeyedandthoughtIwasgoingtodie.Acampcounselorfortunatelycameoverandseparatedus.FromthatpointonwardIwasterrifiedofswimming.ThatissomethingthatIdidnotgetover.Myinabilitytoswimhasbeenoneofmygreatesthumiliationsandembarrassments.ThatiswhenIrealizedthatIwasnottheIncredibleHulk.
Butthereisahappyendingtothisstory.Atage31--that'smyagenow--inAugustItooktwoweekstore-examineswimming,andquestionalltheoftheobviousaspectsofswimming.Andwentfromswimmingonelap--so20yards--likeadrowningmonkey,atabout200beatsperminuteheartrate--Imeasuredit--togoingtoMontaukonLongIsland,closetowhereIgrewup,andjumpingintotheoceanandswimmingonekilometerinopenwater,gettingoutandfeelingbetterthanwhenIwentin.AndIcameout,inmySpeedos,Europeanstyle,feelingliketheIncredibleHulk.
Andthat'swhatIwanteveryoneinheretofeellike,theIncredibleHulk,attheendofthispresentation.Morespecifically,Iwantyoutofeellikeyou'recapableofbecominganexcellentlong-distanceswimmer,aworld-classlanguagelearner,andatangochampion.AndIwouldliketosharemyart.IfIhaveanart,it'sdeconstructingthingsthatreallyscarethelivinghelloutofme.So,movingonward.
Swimming,firstprinciples.Firstprinciples,thisisveryimportant.Ifindthatthebestresultsinlifeareoftenheldbackbyfalseconstructsanduntestedassumptions.Andtheturnaroundinswimmingcamewhenafriendofminesaid,"Iwillgoayearwithoutanystimulants"--thisisasix-double-espresso-per-daytypeofguy--"ifyoucancompleteaonekilometeropenwaterrace."Sotheclockstartedticking.IstartedseekingouttriathletesbecauseIfoundthatlifelongswimmersoftencouldn'tteachwhattheydid.Itriedkickboards.Myfeetwouldslicethroughthewaterlikerazors,Iwouldn'tevenmove.Iwouldleavedemoralized,staringatmyfeet.Handpaddles,everything.EvendidlessonswithOlympians--nothinghelped.AndthenChrisSacca,whoisnowadearfriendmine,hadcompletedanIronManwith103degreetemperature,said,"Ihavetheanswertoyourprayers."AndheintroducedmetotheworkofamannamedTerryLaughlinwhoisthefounderofTotalImmersionSwimming.Thatsetmeontheroadtoexaminingbiomechanics.
Soherearethenewrulesofswimming,ifanyofyouareafraidofswimming,ornotgoodatit.Thefirstis,forgetaboutkicking.Verycounterintuitive.Soitturnsoutthatpropulsionisn'treallytheproblem.Kickingharderdoesn'tsolvetheproblembecausetheaverageswimmeronlytransfersaboutthreepercentoftheirenergyexpenditureintoforwardmotion.Theproblemishydrodynamics.Sowhatyouwanttofocusoninsteadisallowingyourlowerbodytodraftbehindyourupperbody,muchlikeasmallcarbehindabigcaronthehighway.Andyoudothatbymaintainingahorizontalbodyposition.Theonlywayyoucandothatistonotswimontopofthewater.Thebodyisdenserthanwater.95percentofitwouldbe,atleast,submergednaturally.
