Thesearequestionswhichhavetroubledmanforthousandsofyears.TheoldestsurvivingbookontheinterpretationofdreamsisEgyptianandisnearly4,000yearsold.InancientGreece,itwasthoughtthatpeoplewhowereillcouldbecuredbytellingtheirdreams.Theywouldrelatetheirdreamstotheirdoctorswhowouldtellthemwhattheymeant,andthengivethemmedicinetomakethemwell.TheancientChinesebelievedthatifapregnantwomandreamedofabear,shewouldhaveason,andifshedreamedofasnake,shewouldhaveadaughter.Therearemanystoriesaboutdreamsforetelling（预言）thefuture.
