TheEarthwasformedabout4.6billionyearsago.Thefirstlifeappearedaboutabillionyearslater.Thefirstplantsdidn'tappearuntilaround2billionyearsago.Untilabout580millionyearsago,lifeformsweresmallandmicroscopic.Sincethattime,lifehasevolvedintomanydifferenttypes,orspecies.However,scientistsestimatethatmorethan99%ofthemarenowextinct.

TherehavebeenseveralextinctioneventsinthehistoryoftheEarth.Inanextinctioneventmanylifeforms,orspeciesoflife,dieout.Thecausesofmassextinctioneventsareunsolvedmysteries.Theseeventsarenotpredictableandcanhappenatanytime.Scientiststhinkthatsomeofthemwerestartedbyasteroidimpactsorvolcaniceruptions.Eventslikethesecanchangetheglobalconditionsthatlifedependson.
