TheEnglisharepeculiar.OldhousesinEngland,forinstance,costmorethannewones.Theolderthehousethegreaterthecharmitisconsideredtopossess.Housesahundredyearsoldarethoughtmoresolidandlessuglythanthosebeingbuilttoday.Thosetwohundredyearsoldarestillmoresoughtafterandtheirlonghistory.lendsanairofromancetothem.Youcanimagine,then,mydelightwhenasstudentIwasofferedthechancetorentacottagethatdatedfrom1661.Theveryagewasattractionenough.EvenbeforeIhadseenitIwantedit,AndwhenIdidseeitforthefirsttimeitsattractiondoubled.Thereitstood,perchedontheedgeofahilllookingoutoverthecountrysidetowardsthesea,smokedriftingfromitschimneypromisingawarmlogfirewithin.PeeringthroughthenarrowleadedwindowsIcouldseethattheceilingstillshoweditsoldwoodenbeams,whilethefloorwascoveredinancientflagstones.Tosomeonebornandbredinamoderncitythiscountrycottagepromisedescapeintoaruralidyll,adreamcometrue.Iclosedwiththefarmerwhoownedthisdelightwithouthesitationorhaggling.
