ThesetwofamousmasterpiecesGonewiththeWindandVanityFairhavedescribedseveralimagesofwomenunderthesocialbackgroundofthattime.TheAmericannovelGonewiththeWindeulogizesthetwomainfemalecharacterswhosekidneysarecompletelydifferentindiligence,pertinacityaswellaspositiveattitudetowardslifewhentheyencounterdifficulties.Especially,thepain-stakingstriveoftheindomitableandunyieldingScarlettshakesourheartsandinspiresourspirit.ComparetoScarlettandMelanie,TheactressesofEnglandmasterpieceVanityFairRebeccaandAmeliawereconsiderablyinfluentialfemalecharactersinThackeray’sage.Thethesismakesacomparisonbetweenthem:
