HaffnerthoughtGrantseemedlikeaniceguy—hewasalwayssmiling,evenifheneversaidmuch.Butshedidn’tthinkmuchmoreabouthim.Aftercollege,she’dlivedinSpainforayearbeforereturningtotheUnitedStatestohelphermotherandgrandmother,whowerebothill.Unsatisfiedwiththecaretheyreceived,shewenttonursingschoolandstartedworkinginhealthcare.Oncetheywerehealthy,shefocusedonbecomingalawyerandlivingabroad.
