在弗雷德看来，面试进行得很顺利。

五天前他曾向一家小公司申请工作，现在那公司的一名董事正在对他进行面试。

在这之前弗雷德一直在当推销员。

他现在想调工作并不是因为缺钱，而是因为作为一名推销员他几乎没有空闲的时间。

弗雷德在谈话前很担心，生怕头脑发昏说错话，但是很幸运他发现自己同这位董事的共同之处颇多。

显然这位董事很满意。

正当弗雷德在想着自己很可能得到工作时，董事接着问他：

“你愿意加班吗?

”

Fredhadbeenworriedthathemightlosehisheadandsaysomethingsilly,butfortunatelyhefoundthathehadalotincommonwiththedirector.

Itwasclearthatthedirectorwasquitesatisfied.Fredwasthinkingthathischancesoflandingthejobwerefavourablewhenthedirectorproceededtoask,“Doyoumindworkingovertime?

”

汤姆一开始同父亲谈话就想直截了当地把自己的意思说出来。

“爸爸，我作了一个重要的决定，我打算参军去（gointotheservices）。

我们屋子里到处是些谁都不想看一眼的东西，而且也没有人知道今后它们是否还会有用。

车房里有一辆没有轮子的旧自行车。

阁楼上有足够的东西可以开一家小百货商店。

那儿有几篮子孩子的玩具，有几只装满旧衣服的大箱子，有一面破镜子，一只破茶壶，许多捆旧报纸，一只没有指针的钟，还有许许多多东西，全都积满了灰尘。

可以说没有哪个人家有这么多无用的东西。

我几次同我妻子谈，劝她把所有不再需要的东西扔掉，但她不同意，并自信地争辩说这些东西值好大一笔钱呢!

现在我们屋子里的垃圾多得简直只能全家搬出去，以便留出更多的地方去堆垃圾。

Nowthereissomuchjunkinourhousethatperhapsthefamilyhadbettermoveoutsoastomakeroomformorejunk.

最使我满意的一次交谈是十年前在巴黎同一位年轻的荷兰人的交谈。

不记得我们究竟谈了些什么，只记得我不懂荷兰语，他不懂汉语。

很幸运，我们都能讲一些法语。

我设法同他说法语，但忽然我发现自己在找一个等同于“大约”的法语词。

我怎么也想不起那个词了。

可是我却记起了相应的德语词，我用了“Ungefahr”这个词。

他懂得我的意思。

接着我们就用法语和德语混杂着交谈。

后来发现我们还都能说几句西班牙语。

在整个交谈中我们毫不费力地用西班牙语、法语和德语将各自要表达的意思讲给对方听。

当然要把西班牙语、法语和德语混在一起作为一种官方语言是不允许的，但我听说有许多人说一种“混杂欧洲语（pidginEuropean）”。

AmixtureofSpanish,FrenchandGermanis,ofcourse,notacceptableasanofficiallanguage;butIhaveheardofmanypeoplespeakingsomekindof“pidginEuropean”anyway.

如今，手机不再是有钱人才能买得起的奢侈品，它已成为我们生活中的必需品，是必备的几样东西之一。

有的人出去约会也用手机通知对方到达的时间。

这种痴迷于移动设备的心态正在妨碍我们享受生活中的小事。

事实上，技术应该是促进我们生活方式的工具，而不是我们人类生来享受的那些美好事物的替代品。

手机当然对我们的生活产生了重要影响，但这种影响应该向好的方向发展。

买东西是一项重要的人类活动。

人们花钱的方式，花钱买的东西能反映出个人的兴趣爱好（personaltaste）。

然而他们最终往往会买下一些次品。

他们不仅会买下质量有问题的商品，也有可能会花一大笔钱买那些根本不需要的东西。
