CourseDescription
Thiscourseexaminesthebiographyofoneofthemostimportantcharactersintwentieth-centuryU.S.history:
theautomobile.Embracingthehistoriesofbusiness,policy,labor,theenvironment,technology,andculture,thiscourseseeksaholisticunderstandingoftheroleofthecarinAmericanlife.Itwillexaminetheinventionandadoptionoftheautomobile,theriseofassembly-linemanufacturing,theevolutionofroadsidearchitecture,andthechallengesposedbyoilshortages.Itseekstodrawavarietyofstudentsandencouragethemtothinkaboutoneofthefundamentalinteractionsbetweenhumansandmachinesinthehistoryofthenationandintheirownlives.
Goals
Inthiscourse,studentswill:
∙ReflectonthesignificanceoftheautomobileinshapingtheAmericaweknowtoday,includingtheirowndailylives.
∙Usetheautomobiletounderstandtheinterconnectionsamongtechnology,business,labor,culture,andpolitics.
∙Practicecriticalreadingofprimaryandsecondarysources,includingtexts,images,music,andmotionpictures.
∙Practiceresearchskillsusingsourcesinelectronicdatabases,onpaper,andintheworldaroundus.
∙Practiceskillsofwriting,editing,andrevision.

AttendanceandParticipation(15percent)
Muchofthiscourseisdiscussionbased,whichmeansthateachstudent’slearningdependsontheotherstudents’beingprepared,punctual,andactive.Theparticipationgradeisdesignedtoencourageyoutohelpotherstudentslearn,andtoprepareyouforalifetimeofmeetings.
Theparticipationgradeisbasedonyourpromptarrivalandactiveparticipationindiscussions.Thehighestparticipationgradeswillgotostudentswhoanimateclassdiscussionsbyaskingquestionsoftheirpeers.Themostvaluablecontributionsoftenbeginwiththewords,“Idon’tunderstand.”Answeringsuchquestions,andquestionsposedbytheinstructor,isalsohelpful.
Youshouldbeinyourseat,readytotakenotesat12noon;chronictardinesswillloweryourgrade.Tobecountedasontime,youmustsigninby12noon.Tobecountedpresent,youmustsignthelateattendancesheet.Ifyouneedtoleaveearly,pleasespeaktomebeforeclass.Ifyouleaveearlywithoutnotifyingme,youwillbecountedabsent.
