1.Introduction

OliverTwisterisafamouscriticalrealismnovelcreatedbytheprominentcriticalrealistCharlesDickens.Itdoesnotonlyexposethedarknessofsociety,thedecayofthecapitalism,andtheselfishnessanduglinessofthehumannaturebutalsodescribesomethingpeculiartomankind–purityandconscience.Thethemeofthisnovelistoadvocategoodnessandbeautythatwilldefeattheevilfinally.Evennowadays,thenovelstillhasagreateffectonthedevelopmentofthesociety.Someproblemswhichisdescribedinthenovelcanalwaysbefoundinmodernsocietysuchasthepoverty,thecorruption,thediscriminationandtheinequality.Especiallythegoodnessinhumanityisalwaysthefocusofpeople’sattention.Peaceanddevelopmentarethemainthemeofcontemporarytimes.Whattheharmonioussocietyneedispurethoughtsandgoodquality.Almostofuswouldliketobelievethatworldisbeautifulandtomorrowisbetter.However,wehavetoadmitthatthereisweaknessinhumannatureandnoonecouldbeperfect.Asanoldsayinggoes,wherethereissunshine,thereisalsoshade.Pastandpresent,thecharacterofevilanduglinessisalwaysalive.Fromancienttimesuntiltoday,theevilmenisneverdisappear.Forexample,thief,robber,killer,swindler,communicablediseasecarrier,pillager,treacherousman,schemeretc.Itishardtoimagineaworldshortofpurityandhumanity.Worldneedstofindthepurityburiedinthehumansoul.BytrimmingthestudiesonOliverTwisterandanalyzingthepurposesofwritingandwritingskill,thispaperaimstomakepeoplehaveabetterunderstandingaboutthisnovel,tomakepeoplefindtherealsocialvalueofthisnovel,tohelppeopleknowthestrengthofpurityandconscience.

2.PreviousStudiesonOliverTwister

In1838,AssoonasOliverTwisterwaspublished,thenovelhadarousedattentionandstrongshockintheLondonliterature.ManyscholarsandwritersareveryinterestedinOliverTwisterandtherearelotsofresearchaboutthisnovelintheworld.DifferentscholarshavedifferentstudiesonOliverTwisteraccordingtotheirrespectivestandardofclassificationandtheyhavedifferentresearchdirections.

2.1.ForeignResearch

OliverTwisterhasbeenresearchedabroadforalonghistory.IntheresearchfieldofVictoriaculture,Dickensisthemainresearchobject.TheforeignscholarGilbertKeithChestertonpublishedacollectedworksnamedAppreciationsandCriticismsoftheWorksofCharlesDickensin1991.Generally,mostpeoplethinkthatDickenshasmanyclassicalworkswhichhasgreateffectonthewholesocietyandheshouldbeapersonwhoispraised.However,Chestertonhashisowndifferentanddistinctidea,aboutDickens,thatthegreatpeopleDickensalsoshouldbecriticized.

Dickens’plotshaveoftenbeendismissedasconventionalorcheaplysensational.ButinParentageandInheritanceintheNovelsofCharlesDickens,releasedbyAnnySadrin,hearguesthattheyshouldratherbeseenastheembodimentofoneofDickens’scentralpreoccupation:

dramatisedritualsofsuccession.Throughreadingsofindividualtexts,ProfessorSadrinshowshowthesimplepatternofquestforfatherwhichcharacterisesOliverTwisterdevelopsinDickens'slaternovelsintoanextendedexplorationofthetripleinheritanceofappearance,nameandproperty.Increasingintricaciesofplotrepresentgrowingtensionbetweenconflictingforcesintheparent-childrelationship:

thewishtobelongingsandthewishtofree,thequestforidentityandthefearofshamefulidentification,Throughout,Dickensisusingplottoaccountforthecomplexprocessofreinstatementandrevaluationwhichenablesrightfulheirstotaketheirrightfulplaceinthefamilyandsociety.ItisobviousthatauniqueperspectivewasadoptedbyAnnySadrintofindthenewthings.

Inthefirsthalfofhiscareer,Dickenswrotesomeofthemostimportantnovelsofthenineteenthcentury,includingThePickwickPapers,OliverTwister,andMartinChuzzlewit.Theywerevaluableandvitalbooks,withaninventivecomicforceunprecedentedintheEnglishnovel.OtherDickens:

PickwicktoChuzzlewitworkedbyJohnBowenin2003,itisthefirstfull-lengthstudyinhisresearchforthirtyyears.JohnBowenblendscontemporarytheoriesandhistoricalawarenesstoarguethatDickens’sworksareradicalinbothpoliticalandfictionalterms.Withatactfuluseofcontemporarycriticaltheory,heshowshowtheiroftenuncannypowerdisturbsandtransformsourwaysofunderstandingDickens'sworkandhisplaceduringthestudies.

In2001,ManlinessandtheMaleNovelistinVictorianLiteraturewaspublishedbyAndrewDowling.DowlingtriedtoinvestigatethatDickensmanagedtocreatethespiritsofManliness.Itisobviousthatpeopleinthatperiodwasveryfamiliarwiththemanliness,butDowlingfiguredthatthiskindofnotionisnotconstantbutrockingandnothingisabsolute.

Asitismentionedabove,therangeofstudiesonOliverTwisterisnotveryintegratedandthestudiesmainfocusedonthewriterDickensratherthanthebookOliverTwister.However,wehavetosaythatthoseresearchercontributetothecontinuestudiesonthewriterandthisbook.

2.2.DomesticResearch

InChina,thestudiesonOliverTwisterstartedtobeprosperousfrom1980stonow.Andhundredsofthebooksandworkswerepublished.

During1980s,theresearchonthewriterhasbeenaconcern.Forinstance,ACriticalBiographyofCharlesDickenswaspublishedbyLuoJinguo.Hecollectssomerelevantcriticalpapers,toCharlesDickens,writtenbythefamouswritersandcriticsfromEuropeandAmerica.Allofhiscriticshavehisowndifferentanduniqueideasandthisbookisamasterpiecewithoutdoubt.

In1990s,thestrongvitalityofOliverTwisterwaswrittenbyPanMingyuan.Byanalyzingthepoliticalcontentandartisticcharacteristics,heexplainedthereasonwhyOliverTwisterwassopopularintheworldandhetestifiedthatthevitalityofaliteratureandartisticworkisdependontheintrinsicvalue.Withthedeepdescriptionofthesocialbackgroundandbrutalreality,hewouldliketoexpressthatlittleOliverwasaverystrongboywhohasneverbeenknockeddownandthestrongvitalitywasalwaysthere.

AnAnalysisofNancyinOliverTwisterwaswrittenbyLiuJingxianginSouth-CentralUniversityforNationalities.ThewriterbeganwiththedefinitionofcriticalrealismandDickens’slife,thenfocusedonaseriesofactionsfromNancytoanalyzehercharacterandfactors.Nomatterhowcruelthesurroundingis,goodnesswillneverbeeliminated.HewantedtocallforthenatureofgoodnessandcriticizetheeducationsysteminEngland.TheanalysisofNancycannotonlycausereaderstosympathizewiththiswomanwhorealizedhererrorsandcorrectmistakesinherownway,butalsohelppeopletoknowthetruefeaturesofthatsociety.Nancywasagirlwhowasnotjustasignalofsimplefigurebutauniqueandvividcharacterwhichwasdeepimpresstoreaders.ItisclearthatthecharacterofNancyisplayasignificantroleinthestudiesonOliverTwister.

Intheearlytwenty-firstcentury,ThestudiesonOliverTwisterhasafurtherdevelopment.Aconsiderableamountofresearchhasbeendonetoanalyzethenovel.OliverTwister:

LookupattheHeavensinmiserywaspublishedbyTangXicheng.ByintroducingbrieflyDickensandhisworks,providingabriefbackgroundofthestory,doingsomedeepresearchesintothesettingofthe19thcenturyofEngland,theauthormadereadershaveagoodunderstandingofOliverwhosefatewasextremeterrible.Thisisthebattleofalittleboywithoutanyweapons,justwithhiskindnessandhismentality,fightingforhisfreedom.Thiskindofanalysisprovidedaninsightforreaderstokeepapositiveattitudetowardslife.

Astimegoeson,somepeoplebegantoconcerntheJudaismproblem.TheAnti-SemitisminCharlesDickens’OliverTwisterwaswrittenbytheQiaoGuoqiangwhowasaprofessorofEnglishattheSchoolofForeignLanguages,CentralChinaNormalUniversity,specializinginAmericanliteratureandintellectuals.Asforthesocialcriminalmentionedinthenovel,hethoughtthatthetruthwasnotreallyexposed.Onthecontrary,Standingtheracismstandpoint,heinsistedthatJewwasbornwiththecharacterofevilandJewwasnotapartofthemankind’scivilizationsociety.FaginwasatypicalJewinOliverTwister.Tosomeextent,hewastheclassicalrepresentofJewandhewastheprotagonistwhowasbeenresearched.Fromthepointofracism,itisbelievedthatthestudiesonOliverTwisterbegananewjourney.
