Attheconclusionofthestudy,theresearchersfoundonlynormal-weightsubjectshadastatisticallysignificantreductionincaloricconsumptionbyeatingslowly.“Alackofstatisticalsignificanceintheoverweightandobesegroupmaybepartlyduetothefactthattheyconsumedlessfoodduringbotheatingconditionscomparedtothenormal-weightsubjects,”ProfessorMeenaShahsaid,“itispossiblethattheoverweightandobesesubjectsfeltmoreself-conscious,andthusatelessduringthestudy.”
Despitethedifferencesincaloricconsumptionbetweenthenormal-weightandoverweightandobesesubjects,thestudyfoundsomesimilarities.Bothgroupsfeltlesshungrylateronaftertheslowmealthanafterthefastmeal,whichindicatesthatgreaterhungersuppression（抑制）amongbothgroupscouldbeexpectedfromamealconsumedmoreslowly.Also,boththenormal-weightandoverweightorobesegroupsconsumedmorewaterduringtheslowmeal.“Thehigherwaterintakeduringthesloweatingconditionmayhaveaffectedfoodconsumption,”saidShah.AccordingtoShah,slowingthespeedofeatingmayhelpsuppresshungerlevelsand“mayevenimprovetheenjoymentofameal”.
