Thetypicaldieselengineonthebuscausesnoticeablelevelsofairpollution,noiseandvibration.Withhybridvehiclesandthenewformsoftrolleybus,BRTdesignershopetoincreaseridequalityanddecreasepollution.Astheenergyuseforaccelerationisproportionaltothevehiclemass,electrictractionallowslightervehicles,fasteraccelerationandenergythatcanbefedbackintobatteriesorthegridthroughregenerativebrakes.Regenerativebrakingisstandardonmanymodernrailsystems.

ABRTsystemcanusetrolley-busestolowergaseousandnoiseemissions.Thepricepenaltyofinstallingoverheadlinescouldbeoffsetbythesystem'
