HIDDENBEAUTYOFTHE‘UGLIES'
Armedwithcomputers,freightmanagerscanpackatrucksothatonlythebarestminimumofspaceisleftempty.Theyclick,dragandhitreturntodetermineexactlyhowtofillthevehiclewithgoodsreadyformarket.Butwhatabouttransportingthe“uglies”–theboxesofdifferentshapesandsizescontainingbrokenandunwantedproducts–backtothemanufacturer?
“[Reverselogistics]isneverquitethesameasaforwardlogisticssystem,whereyoucanoptimiseeachtrucksoyoumighthaveonlyasparemillimetreinside,”saysMartinPatten,managerofthetechnologyprogrammeforEuropeatCiscoSystems,thenetworkingequipmentsupplier.“Youcan'tquitedothatonthewaybackbecausepeoplemightusebubblewraporputthingsinbiggerboxes.
Worse,productsusuallyneedtobecollectedfromallsortsofdifferentlocations.Asaresult,itcancostfourtimesasmuchtotakesomethingbackastosenditout.
Forretailersandmanufacturers,poorlypacked,brokenandmisshapenpackagesmakeupanincreasinglylargechunkoftheirshipments.Thosewhocanmasterthecomplexprocessofreverselogisticsstandtomakebigsavingsinefficiencyaswellaskeeptheircustomershappy.

”
Moreover,ifthatprocessisinconvenient,shopperscangotootheronlineretailersfortheirpurchases.“Ifit'snotcustomer-friendlyit'sgoingtohurttheirbusiness,”saysScottHarkins,vice-presidentofproductmarketingatFedEx.

”
However,amoresignificantchallengeislooming.EuropeanUnionlegislationnowrequiresmanufacturersandimportersofelectronicgoodstocollectandrecycletheirdevicesattheendoftheirlives.“Thelogisticsafterthesaleoftheproductisnowasimportantasitisbeforethesale,andthat'sahugeshift,”saysMrWright.

”
Complyingwiththelatterobligation–knownasindividualproducerresponsibility(IPR)–hasmanagersscratchingtheirheads.“It'sanenormouslogisticschallenge,”saysKirstieMcIntyre,EuropeanenvironmentaltakebackcompliancemanageratHP.
“There'splentyofavailabilityforrecycling,”shesays.“Butthere'snoinfrastructureandtechnologytodealwithIPRequipment.”Evencompanieswithsupplyorleasingcontractscannotsimplypickupoldmachineswhentheydropoffnewones,sincethedeliveryofnewproductsmightoccuratadifferenttimefromtheretrievalofoldequipment.
”
“It'saseparatelogisticssystem,”saysMrPatten.“Ifitwasacaseoftakingouttheoldoneandhavingitreadywhenwedeliveredthenewone,wecouldtakeitaway.Buttherealityoftheseprojectsisthatsomecouldtakeayear.”
Whilecompaniescanmaketheirlogisticssystemsasefficientaspossiblewhendeliveringproducts,returnsrelyonconsumers,retailersandotherthirdpartydistributorstolabelandpackagethegoods.
Shippersandcarrierscanmakethingseasier.FedExprovidesdownloadablelabelsonitswebsitethatcanbefilledoutbyretailersandsenttocustomerswithgoodstoreturn.Ciscoofferspackagingguidelinesforitscustomers.
Thenexthurdleissortingthegoods,decidingwhichtorefurbishandre-useandwhichtodismantleandrecycle.CompaniessuchasCisco,HPandIBMhaveregionalprocessingcentrestowhichproductscanbesentforevaluation.Smallercompanies,however,donothavetheresourcestooperatesuchcentres

”
“Thesavingsarephenomenal,”saysPeterWillems,managingdirectoroftheSupportServicesDivisionofChristianSalvesen,whichhandlesreverselogistics.“Becauseifyouconsolidatetheprocess,yougenerateeconomiesofscale.”

Opportunitiestoreuseproductsorrecovertheirre-usablematerialsarewhatmakefinancialsenseofthereversesupplychain.Intheelectronicssector,copper,tinandgoldextractedfromcomputersandotherhigh-techdevicescanbesoldorusedinnewmachines.
”
Moreover,workingequipmentthathasbeenreplacedbynewermodelscanberefurbishedandresold.“It'sagoodbusiness,”saysDanielRansdell,generalmanagerofIBM'sglobalassetrecoveryservices.“Afour-year-oldlaptophasgoodmarketvalue.”
”
However,therealvalueofthereversesupplychainliesinitsinfluenceonthedesignofnewproducts.“There'samassiveamountofinformationtobegained,”saysMrWright.“Ifyouhavetherightinformation,youcanseethattherewasafundamentalflawinaproductandgetitfixedquickly.”
