ThedecisiontoclimbMt.FujiwasbasedonthePerkins,discoverythat,duetoculturalbackground,hearttransplantationinJapandidn’texist.Thefirstorgantransplantdidn’toccurinthatcountry,infact,until1999.Asaresult,mostpeopleinJapanwithterminalheartconditionsneverevenhadthechancetotrysurgery.

October21,2001KellyandCraigPerkinsclimbedMt.KilmanjaroinhonorofDr.ChristianBernaardwhoperformedthefirsthearttransplantin1960.Whentheyarrivedatthetopofthisfamousmountain,CraigPerkinssurprisedhiswife,thefirstrecordedheart-transplantpersontoreachthehighestpointonthecontinentofAfrica,bypresentingherwiththeashesofthewomanwhohaddonatedherhearttoPerkins.Inabriefbutsacredceremony,Perkinsspreadtheashesofthisbravedonor.
