In1374,insomeEuropeantowns,peopledidexactlythat.Theywerestruckbyadancingplague（瘟疫）thatforcedthemtodance.

Shewassoonjoinedby34peoplewithinaweek;bytheendofthemonth,thecrowdhadincreasedto400,mostofwhomwerewomen.Again,peopleweredancinguntiltheycouldnolongercontinue,withsomefinallydyingfromheartattacksorexhaustion.Onereportshowsthattheplaguewaskillingaround15peopleperday.

Astheplagueworsened,concernednobles（贵族）turnedtotheadviceoflocaldoctors,whosaidthattheplaguewasa “naturaldisease” causedby “hotblood.” Sothenoblesencouragedmoredancing.

Thereasonbehindtheiractionswastheybelievedthedancerscouldonlyrecoveriftheydancedcontinuouslynightandday.Thenoblesevenpaidformusicianstokeepthemoving.
