In1374,insomeEuropeantowns,peopledidexactlythat.Theywerestruckbyadancingplague(瘟疫)thatforcedthemtodance.

Overthenextcentury,therewereonlyafewoutbreaks.However,inthesummerof1518,itreappearedinthecityof Strasbourg, France.ItallbeganwithawomancalledMrs.Troffea,whostartedtodancecrazilyinthestreet.

Shewassoonjoinedby34peoplewithinaweek;bytheendofthemonth,thecrowdhadincreasedto400,mostofwhomwerewomen.Again,peopleweredancinguntiltheycouldnolongercontinue,withsomefinallydyingfromheartattacksorexhaustion.Onereportshowsthattheplaguewaskillingaround15peopleperday.

Astheplagueworsened,concernednobles(贵族)turnedtotheadviceoflocaldoctors,whosaidthattheplaguewasa “naturaldisease” causedby “hotblood.” Sothenoblesencouragedmoredancing.

Thereasonbehindtheiractionswastheybelievedthedancerscouldonlyrecoveriftheydancedcontinuouslynightandday.Thenoblesevenpaidformusicianstokeepthemoving.

Then,asbefore,itdisappearedalmostassuddenlyasithadcome.
